Here are a couple videos I found on YouTube about rigging mechanical rigs in Blender.

I came across this tutorial which explains the overall concept of rigging and how everything is eventually parented back to the root bone. The root bone can then be moved anywhere in 3D space, scaled, rotated etc and everything follows including the rig.

I used a combination of video tutorials to get a system that works for me.

The Train tutorial I linked above was great for understanding bones, armatures, mechanical rigging and the concept of how it should be done in blender.

This tutorial was great for drivers and custom properties.

I also purchased this course which covers just about all aspects of blender including rigging, drivers and animation. A bargain at its price. I have only watched a few videos so far but have learned a lot. Much more to watch and learn yet.
