well it really depends on which one you like the most. you can check out the demos for some programs like 3ds max, modo etc. i have only worked with swift 3d (3d for flash) and 3ds max... so i cant really help you.

ive tried various 3d programs to model, so for modeling i would suggest modo/lightwave rhino/max

if you want to make character....creatures you should try zbrush..for planes and technical stuff your driving better with xsi, maya max...the programm with the most easiest interface is cinema4D, its very easy to lern and is as good as the other programms:)

here some links to show the different from skulpting and multi function programs

pixologics Zbrush (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/home/home.php)
maxons cinema 4D (http://www.maxon.net/pages/dyn_files/dyn_htx/htx/welcome_e.html)

heres a free programm, also very good and nice to start :)
Blender (http://www.blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html)

If you actually think of buying the software officially, have a look at XSI or Modo, both very capable modellers and renderers for a very good price.

If I'd have to start from scratch, I'd probably give Blender a go. Great features and totally free.

As far as easiest to learn, Modo is #1.

I've only ever used Max and also done some modelling in XSI. Both are excellent for modelling but in my opinion Max has the edge.... then again it should as it is about 8 times more expensive than XSI foundation.
