Hey all, thought i'd share this old 10 min video of when I'm painting a Skyraider. Unfortunatelly there's no voice "tute" but a picture says more than a 1000 words!

Basically what it's all about is start big and finish with the details, use hte lasso tool and big brushes first and after that smaller brushes :P

Cheers!

Thanks for posting that, it was very interesting to watch how you work.

You can draw faster than my PC renders!

Very nice to watch. Try to get this movie next to Wiek's animation in the exposition in Soesterberg. It will attract many people's attention!

Thanks for showing.

You make it look very easy John !
Thanks for posting, interesting to see how you go about a quick speed paint, I liked the way you quickly corrected errors in the perspective which you do have very good eye for.

Thanks again for that John ;)
Hope you'll do a "real" Skyraider artwork sometime in the future. Perhaps a Korean war ground attack or Vietnam war MiG-17 kill?

Crap, Sorry guys I forgot all about this thread, lots of work nowadays,

Galgot: I didn't zoom because I used camtasia recorder and I actually painted it in that resolution, but for "real" artwork you can bet I'm doing a whole lot of zooming :P

I still have ALOT to learn when it comes to perspective, it's fun to try and eyeball, but sometimes it just ruins it for ya, I've bought a huge wade M perspective book but I just don't have the guts to dig in to it really, thanks anyway :P

Skyraider: thank you for fixing me a thumbnail! doesn't look too bad zoomed out like that huh? :P yeah a skyraider would be fun to paint, but I'll sink my teeth into that when I feel confortable working on such a huge plane with so many details! (fins here, bumps there, rocket rails here and rocket rails there :P )

Cheers!

A necessary process for traditional artists tho.

You might consider a 3d package with bezier curves. I think blender has bezier curves and is a free package which is probably all you will need. You don't really need to know too much about the 3D package. All you have to know is how to set up blueprints and draw bezier curves & edit them, set up a camera and do a simple render to represent the general shape of the aircraft. I modelled this F4F with bezier curves and it took about 4 hours work (in 3DS max). Then it can be copied around for other aircraft in the scene. Anyway just another way to get the shape of the aircraft reasonably accurate without going through the time consuming process of descriptive geometry or relying totally on the good old fashioned eyeball method. One of the biggest advantages is that you can really play around with the composition and arrangement of the plane/s until your happy with it.

Being my favourite airplane I want to do it justice, so I haven't modelled it yet myself either. But I am at the point where I feel comfortable I can tackle it. The Corsair was (is!) a good exercise :)

You might consider a 3d package with bezier curves, etc.
You can even use Sketchup for this. I'm working on a Hurricane in Sketchup right now.

This is Awesome! Thanks for posting this. I love your concept art on your site. I didn't know you did the concept art for BF2142, I play that game a lot. :)

What do you use for your drawing? Wacom? do you draw on the pad or on screen?

Thanks!
