oooaaaoooo, bokabokaboka!

Here's something that would fit in the dictionary under "pain in the butt" after struggling with trying to eyeball the perspective, anyway, here's the result, Thank you all who helped with info about this FW 190!

Fantastic work mate!
I love the way you manage to combine a painterly style, realistic lighting, great drama and awesome detail into one great piece of art. You even drew the dent in the chin of the pilot (http://www.luftwaffe.cz/dahl.html), as well as his moustache - but most pilots have those!

Question: how do you draw those awesome clouds? Do you use photo reference of just draw em by heart. They look utterly believable, as does the lake and its reflections. It gives a nice, icy mood, perfect for December 1944 (when Dahl flew his "Blaue 13" on bomber intercept missions with JG 300).

By the way, the clouds at the top of the image remind me of layers of cirrus, formed by dissipating aircraft contrails. I am not sure if it was intentional, but it's a nice hint to their creators: the hordes of allied heavy bombers Dahl and his Schwarm is hunting for ;)

Great work mate! Already thrilled to see your next masterpiece! Keep em coming!

Wow, very nice John ! Your work just keeps getting better.

The only crits from me.
It seems like the cowling opening on the closests 2 FW's is sloping backwards a bit.
Maybe the exhaust gases are bit too strong but it is early morning so maybe they could be like that, not really sure.

Love the atmosphere and brushwork.

Hello All! thanks for the great compliments and replies!

Skyraider: Thanks m8! guess what we forgot, a PITOT TUBE! OMG WTF LOOOOL!!!1

I havbe some painting and some jpg saving to do :(

anyway, yes clouds are hard to paint and I do take out my camera every flight i can get, just to get a shot of them from the right angle!

I see you studied meteorology lol, I had no idea they were from planes, actually, those clouds are just a few strokes, and I let them be just os that the other stuff could catch the eye, sometimes details just aint very good at certain places.

Even though I have photos of clouds, its very hard to paint them, the best thing would be to pait them in layers, from the back to the foreground, but since I'm too lazy and the huge amount of layers for this kind of dotty cloudscape would make me tired of the painting very quickly.

In this case I had to paint the clouds to somewhat match the perspective the planes were painted in, its easy to choose an image "i'm gonna paint that" and its a 100% photoreal cloudscape but it just doesnt feel right cause its not taken with the same "lens" know what i mean?

Skyraider: Thanks m8! guess what we forgot, a PITOT TUBE! OMG WTF LOOOOL!!!1"We" huh? hehehe  Your historic advisor let you down? :p
Be sure to put it at the wingtip or it will become an A-7.

Also add that dangling oxygen mask while at it ;)

BTW Kevjon: I've looked at FW 190's and they seem to have a slightly leaning opening, I'm not sure if it's correct tho, but I'll check it out again, I still have to change the other wurgers tho lol!

Skyraider, dang, that too, crapzorz! I'm on it

Dangling at a minimum, looks like they are pretty close to 10,000 to me, would have masks on above that, other than that, absolute stunner, I love it.

Pilot in the details is a ded ringer for my college roomate:lol:

Jäklar :)
That is fantastic work John, I'd say it matches Nicolas Trudgians' JG300 series of Aviation art, maybe better.
Especially the farthest 190 (Blaue9 is it?) looks so right in the morning sun light, but just about everything looks right, the planes, the light and the atmosphere in your "shot", besides it's a brilliant composition.

(PS I love the little line of highlight under the canopy of Blaue7)
If I would mention something, maybe the Balkenkreuzen of Blaue7 and Blaue5 sticks a tad too much out from the background, but I wouldn't)
