Hi All !

First thing : Happy new year to all of you !

I "recently" started a thread here about the WWI Battleship Courbet. I stopped modelling it for the moment, because of the lack of proper documentation about many parts of the ship, mainly the superstructures, which ended up being VERY frustrating... Sorry for those of you who took time to read and comment this thread. I will come back to the Courbet in a while, probably after... the Yamato !, I started a few days ago. The hull is taking form slowly, and the excellent book "Anatomy of the ship" shows every details possible, this time.
The yamato hull is really bizarre, rather hugly, and tricky to model, in my opinion, but the finished ship is impressive. Here are the first screenshots of it... I hope you'll enjoy it.
The Yamato, once completed will be part of a complete website I'm - sloooooowly :) - preparing about WWII battleships !...

Cheers

Yeah I agree that Yamato's hull is a bit of an ugly design - but it's good to see someone tackling her! Good start so far.

Hello, If You're modeling yamato from Anatomy of the ship reference sheet, than unfortunatly these are not quite precise as the author said. Mr Janusz Skulski has improve all the references and it would be shipped soon. So on Yours positiion I would wait a little bit for this instead of making model from references wchich are not best quality. Greeting. Victor.

You're in for (another) long haul! The Yamato is quite a beast. Will keep an eye on this one!

If the Japanese do anything right then it's properly documenting their war gear. Books about Japanese ships and aircraft are second to none, with exquisite technical detail. If only I could actually read them!

Interesting to hear that that book isn't as accurate as it could be - mind you from what I've read most of the plans were destroyed.

I'm looking forward to this too Eross - shame about the Courbet though.

Indeed, the "Anatomy of the ship" book about the yamato contains some imprecisions. For instance, the front and side view of the hull forms for the stern section of the ship, do not match. The best I could do was to manually correct and compromise to lower the differences between the two plans.
Nevertheless, the book remains excellent, especially if you consider that the Yamato original buleprints are not exaclty available from your rearest bookshop !... Also, even if I try to be as precise as I can, LightWave isn't a CAD program. What I try to acheive is an overall convincing image.

And if it were a CAD program, you'd be sat there doing it for years... so its probably better this way!

Congratulations on taking on THE beast of warships, quite a task. Just saw a trailer on Youtube for the new film about it's last suicidal mission. I think it's released in japanese only, and called just "Yamato"

I think the Yamato book is far better than the Bismarck book - I was surprised to hear that it is so inaccurate.

Another point of call maybe to pick up the Tamiya 1/350 model - the upperworks may be wrong, but the hull form might not be that bad.

Nils: That film sounds interesting - could you post a link to the trailer please?

Hi Lukem...
A Tamiya model, U say ?... Right away, Sir !... :D This is my desk, at home. Everything I need to model the Yamato is hopefully here : Anatomy of the ship book, the big "Battleships" book, and... Zi Tamiya model. If I do not come up with a proper model... I give up !!!
Today, little progress, mainly with te rudders...

btw : I think the trailer is this one (the image is crap, though...) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25OjtaIe43Y

Yamato always impressed me.
There is a 1/10 model of it at the Kure museum in Japan, came across this galery:

220 photos. could be good reference.

If I ever get over to Japan, I gotta see that ! Thats the most impressive model I've seen.

Just read a book about the Yamato's sister ship (the Musashi) over the Xmas holidays by Akira Yoshimura. Very interesting read, all the trouble they went to to hide the construction of these monster size battleships and the extreme security measures that were put in place to ensure nothing was leaked about them.

My god! That's a huuuuuuuuuge model! You could live in that - at sea!

HaHa! All you need now is the Gold Medal Models photo-etch kit and you'll be well away.

Thanks alot for the link to the trailer - I'm waiting for it to load now.

I remember seeing the Kure model in an issue of a warship magazine some time ago - I only picked it up because most of it was devoted to museum ships like Mikasa and either New Mexico or Texas. Thanks Galgot for the link to further pictures:)

Wow I agree :) 1/10th..... that means 1,8" main artillery, you could actually sink smaller shipping with that model, hehe

Hi all,

Well, as a contrary to what I said at the begining of this thread and having luckily put my hands on "proper" references for the battleship COURBET, i'm gonna finish this one before resuming the modelling of the Yamato... A sort of FIFO method... :p

Sorry for that

Cheers
