While taking a slight break from the MARK V project, I have been caught doing allot of low poly work. Yesterday night a friend requested a low poly, M1083 supply truck in the SOF configuration. Being it is Sunday morning here, I'm going to model the whole truck in one day and hopefully be able to UV unwrap today too.

Here is my start, 45 minutes of modeling. 914 verts, 887 faces.

*Updated* After a spending 2 hours online searching for more pictures of the M1083, I spent 65 minutes modeling. Here are the progress pictures. The model now contains 2051 verts and 1996 faces.

*Updated* 75 more minutes of modeling. The model now consists of 3153 verts and 3083 faces.

*Updated* 75 minutes of modeling. Almost finished! Once I finish the interior, upper cab partition, suspension and rear bench seats, the model will be complete. The model contains 3896 verts 3778 faces.

*Updated* Seeing as it is still Sunday here, I am considering this project a success. All that's left to be modeled is the interior seating, rear view mirrors and the suspension. 80 minutes of modeling produces the upper cab, which is not used for the special operations version and the rear bench seating. Model now contains 5412 verts and 5155 faces.

*Updated*
Well, this project can be considered "Mission Accomplished." The model was completed Sunday (March 4th 2007) at 9:45pm. I know I will not be able to do a complete UV unwrap tonight, so I'll leave that for some other fine day. The model has been left modular so my friend can configure it for infantry, cargo, SOF and as a gun truck. Constructed in 390 minutes (I wasn't working all day.) The truck, as shown, consists of 6220 verts and 5949 faces.

Very nice! Perhaps the headlights could do with a few more polygons, but otherwise it's looking really good.

When I first clicked on this thread I only saw one update, I did not know you were updating by editting your post.

I agree that the headlights could use a few more polys considering the amount put in other details. Also the cylindrical tank between the driver's compartment and the passenger bed looks a little too low-poly compared to the rest of the truck. Also, how many polys make up the steering wheel? It looks very round for an object which isn't very visible. Otherwise it looks really good and can't wait to see it textured. :D

Thanks all!

Skyraider,
Yes the headlights and their ports could use some more polys. However, the model was intended for use in a game, so I had to keep the smaller details low poly. I may try adding some 12 point head lights instead of the current 8 point ones.

Poo,
Yes, I had considered double, triple and quadruple posting but seeing as the model was to be done in one day, I felt it was best to keep the thread clean by editing. Sorry about that.

I've fixed the air filter model, it's now a 12 point cylinder instead of an 8 point cylinder.

The steering wheel is under 120 polys and it is a necessary evil as the interior will be fully visible to the players who are driving.

-Model update-
I have been working on the tires. Currently I have added the normal map and a basic color map. The normal map was generated from a high poly copy of the tire, which was sculpted using a tire tread brush I have made. I'm still experimenting with the brushes and the tires. I'll probably make another brush for the rim, as the current brush is very noisy.

*Edited Update*
Seeing as I wasn't entirely satisfied with the brushes made from pictures, so I decided to create some custom brushes in Inkscape. The brushes still need some refinement, as does the application technique. Never the less the new brushes appear to be a step in the right direction.
