Wow!

Great job! The detail is very good. Weathering effects are also well done.

Do you make your light and shaddow effects with PS or Illustrator?

Cheers, Simon

Another USAF machine, this time from a unit based in Europe :)

McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II 480th TFS Spangdahlem AFB USAFE

This phantom from the 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron was based at Spangdahlem in germany. For a long time the US Airforce kept a large presence in europe to strengthen the european armed forces against the warsaw pact forces. This machine is a typical example of the SEA paintscheme with toned down nationality and unit markings.

Nice phantoms I think everyoen shoudl do the whole Rictoffens flying circus thing and make colorful planes. I worked a lot of E-models in Florida and Iceland. They have so many things waiting to split your head wide open on them. Or as they wer ecalled Phantom bites.

Hey cool a header! :D The research is probably half the fun of doing these! For some strange masochistic reason I enjoy standing in rain and crawling underneath these machines to get good pictures :)

Be really cool to see a 50TFW version of the F-4G and E-models. I was stationed in Germany at Hahn AB during the very early 80's and the 50TFW patch was an extremely rare example of a USAF patch with a nuclear cloud (sonething not very popular in Europe at the time) and a griffin.

Final Jeopardy...

The letters HR represent what geographical feature in Germany?

What unit were you in in the wing? :) From this side the wing logo normally doesn't show.

50EMS...Ammo. We built the bombs and missiles that were loaded on the Pigs. About 6 months after my arrival they were phased out slowly with F-16A's and B's. The squadrons were the blue tailed 496th, orange tailed 313th "Lucky Puppies", and the 417th. 50TFW History page (http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/4596/history.html).

When I was in the Philippines (my assignment after Hahn) we had three squadrons of F-4s (E models and G model "Wild Weasels") - the famous 90TFS "Pair 'O Dice', 3TFS, and 9TFS. We also had the 26th Aggressor Squadron F-5 Tiger II's, and T-33 Shooting Stars.

Cool man!You worked on some nice pieces of aviation history! Have any pictures showing markings and serial numbers? I could try and do some of the Phantoms you worked on :)

Sorry but I do not have any pics...never had access to the planes when I had a camera.

The trivia answer is that Hahn AB's HR tail letter designation stands for HunsReuck Mountains - the mountain range that Hahn AB sat atop. I was told that the literal German translation for Hunsreuck was "Chicken's Back" - tha shape of the tops of the mountains.

McDonnell Douglas F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel 52nd Fighter Wing

Another machine from the 52nd Fighter wing, this time the commanders machine flown by General Bob Oaks and Captain Jim Parker from Spangdahlem AFB in germany :)

McDonnell Douglas F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel 52nd Fighter Wing

This F-4G was to be the only 52nd Fighter Wing Wild Weasel lost during operation desert storm/shield. It crashed on the 18th of Januari 1991 after running out of fuel when it missed the orbit of the tanker. As there was not enough fuel for another attempt to join up with the tanker the pilot decided to divert to Al Kharj Airbase in Saudi Arabia. However heavy construction equipment had taken out the bases runway lights and dense fog obscured the view of the runway. The crew then decided to eject which they both survived. The machine bellied in near the airfield and had to be written of. Sensitive equipment was removed and the remainder of the machine was buried.

Very nice images Supah. Like your choice of the SP models. Reminds me of the good old days of aircraft spotting in that German area.

Is this commisoned work or do you decide yourself which aircraft you draw?

I think an Iranian, Israelian or Japanese would look great too!

At the moment its mainly what I come across in the way of refference. A few companies will be selling some of my older work and I have a spoken agreement with the IDF. Foreign versions are largely limited by the need for info on the maintenance stencelling :)
