View Full Version : German Neubaufahrzeug (new construction vehicle) texture tips.
Hi,
I've made this NBFZ for a game mod but I'm not quite happy with the texture yet. I've handpainted it in Photoshop. Making textures is new to me though. I need some tips how to improve it please.

How do you gyus make your textures? Texture baking or painting in Photoshop or a mix of both? I've tried baking from high poly models but I usuallly get nasty artifacts in the render pictures. That's why I started using my wacom tablet in Photoshop but I think the texture isn't crispy and detailed enough. I haven't figured out what's missing in this texture. Maybe there is too much of something in it. Can somebody help, please?
Well, I guess you guys think my model is not good enough for your board. There will be some help somewhere else.

Crom that is some very nice work. My suggestion is maybe a bit more color variation. Maybe more mud around the tracks. Some battle damage on some of the models(If you can isolate just the odd model). Lastly some of your rivets around the turrets just look a little too big, by making them small it will give a larger scale appearance to the model.
Your emblems and hull numbers could use a little dirting up as well. Hope I haven't critic ya to death.
Thanks for your detailed feedback. It helps me :)

my tip: accented edges. go through every hard edge, and add some highlight,
and shadows on the lower part. it will give the illusion that the corners are smoother than they actually are. there is no such thing as a sharp edge in reality, unless, of course, its a sword.
but well http://www.museumreplicas.com/imagelib/SwordEdge.jpg
as you can see, even a swords edge is slightly rounded.
make the lines thicker or thinner, depending how rounded you want the edge to appear. give the edge a bit depth variation.

Overall the texturing looks solid, I like the metal surface of the models esspecially, really looks like armor. I'm still rather inexperienced when it comes to texturing but it seems like there is some UV stretching going on; some rivets appear long when they should be round. I agree with what has been mentioned by Chukk and dejawolf; the markings look very clean compared to the weathering on the rest of the model.
I'm not too fond of the renders honestly; they appear slightly blurred and the jpeg compression has created some nasty artifacts around the details. Can you post a rendering of the models against a plain white background, illuminated by a skylight perhaps? I think that would help in the texture analysis.
Thanks everybody :) I have enough info to improve it now.
