It is a rather simple one, so I have no clue myself.
Is there a way to make Max files downwards compatible? Maybe a special format to save the files as or something like this?

the absolute only way is to export them as 3ds files. sad but true... stupid too.. at least with maya (some files NOT all) you can edit the file (in ascii only) and load it in an earlier version... but not in max.

u can export them as maxscript works well for me
Ok, so if I build a mesh in Max 8 and export it as a maxscript someone with Max 5 can work with it?
