I had a go at the beast a long long time ago... this is what I made... note that the geometry is not very accurate... I know that...but in those days I didn't have enought control of 3ds Max...

hey
thx for the comments :)
@martin_3d
looks good for a low poly model
i´ll do it a little more highpoly ;)
That's gonna be a nice model.. and nice subject.

make sure you dont put the bolts in the NURMS or smoothing because then you'll get memory errors further on :)
Looking very nice so far!

Ooh 1:35 is sweet. Why did you started it from scratch? It was looking pretty accurate. BTW i have 1:1 metal model (maybe model is not the right word because it's a real one though) very close to me... so bad not my own.
StarForce
05-11-2007, 10:12 PM
damned i wish i had that too ;)
i´ll use a lot from the "old" model
but i lost the overview so i think it is the best to model it again

Just keep up the good work on the great subject. If you need i can take some ref pics for you.
StarForce

thx for the great offer
atm i have enough refpics but maybe i´ll need some later

You can't have enough ref pics. Lurtz, upload them somewhere(in case you didn't already)
Shame you've had to start again - what you had looked great. Still, I'm sure you'll get this iteration looking just as good, if not better!:)
I agree, great subject. They are supposed to be somewhat cramped inside aren't they (more than other modern tanks I mean)?

Really thoses Twin-wheels are welded ? Or they are two wheels separates .
what do you mean?
martin_3d
05-19-2007, 9:57 AM
I think Karras means that, on your model (Page 2, left hand side render 3/4 back right view), one could imagine that the wheels have been molded or forged whereas we all know that on T-72s, as on any modern tanks, the road wheels consist of two separate halves which wear a heavy duty rubber belt and which are screwed together...this obviously doesn't appear on your initial model...but you are probably already in the process of refining it aren't you ?
NB: Karras correct me if I am wrong...

Ah! I wondered what Karras meant too - what you say makes sense Martin.

In the first image it is possible to see that the wheels go together ( two wheels ) , before I thought that they were welded, maybe a optic effect in the render. ( sorry by my poor english lenguage )
Now I can see them correctly . it's a difficult power wheel, sure.
I'm waiting for the tracks ;)
Good work, man

It's coming together really nicelly. Keep up the good work. I still remember once i was going to the closest grocery with my car and i saw T-72 on a truck .. came by next to my car.. and i felt so small.. this thing is really huge and impressive.

That's an intersting story Lurtz. I've seen one at Bovington Tank museum and if it wasn't for the snorkel sticking out of the top, it would have been dwarfed by the tanks around it - it's long and wide but not particularly tall. Mind you that is in a museum environment surrounded by the odd leopard and other such vehicles - what it would look like on the road I've no idea. It's certainly the prettiest modern tank in my opinion though.

Well as far as I am concerned I have had mixed experiences with that beast...at least its export version...M84
- 1 / I had the opportunity to ride a captured one of those after Gulf-War n°1... you obviously need to be of small contitution to accomodate yourself in the commander's sit...plus the different sights are narrow and scarse and do not provide a good visibility of the battlefield... But the beast with its very low profile and extreme agility is a devil to hunt...
- 2 / I faced some of these in former Yugoslavia sometimes afterwads... my own Panhard 'VBL' armoured car was painted white (which perfectly fitted the snowy country side of the early spring 93) and the beasts belonged to the so called 'Arkan Brigade' , tchekniks extremists ... and God they looked awsome...
- 3 / It is true that, when exposed close to other Steel Dinosaurs our beasts looks small and a bit 'toyish'... put it aside a Tiger or even a smaller Panther....and it will be as surprising...same game of perspective if you have the opportunity to give a closer look at the collection of main guns exposed in the back of Bovington main WW-II Hall ...
well was just my - long - 10p... cheers mates
Perspective ... perspective... perspective...
M84 was actually a Yugoslav version of T-72. Visually it is almost the same but a lot of things were different. Like gun, electronics and 1000 hp engine. I think (but am not sure) that they used license built German engine.
Compared to other modern MBTs T-72 is small and lightweight but that can be advantage sometimes.
Nevertheless T-72 and and it's derivatives is one of the coolest looking tanks. It certainly looks fast. :)

The Karan , it's the new idea of Indian DRDO for a new tank. Also called
Tank-Ex. Hull of T-72 & Arjun's Turret. Like this :

Nice work!! compliments ..!!!
All those datails are really beautiful to look at.
Small nitpick: There is a small crease in the mesh in picture 05 (at the base of the hook on top side), which is probably because of using concave n-gon, splitting it should fix it.
Can't wait for the turret. ;) It already looks awesome.
