Hi all !

Two 3D projects for me now. The first one, completely off topic will be a photorealistic render of the M7 Camera from Leica - obviously not posted here ! :p .
The second will be another battleship, the BRETAGNE, successor of the COURBET Class. These two classes have a lot in common while being different enough to be worth the attempt. The Bretagne class battleships were mounted with 5 x 2 13.4" main guns, and 22 (!) x 5.5" secondary guns. The main guns were all placed in the centerline, permitting a 10 guns broadside, just like the COURBET, but with 2 less guns. The weight saved was used to increase caliber of the main guns, from 12" to 13.4", making the BRETAGNE the first french "Super-Dreadnought". The secondary armament has a completly different layout, than the COURBET.

Here are a impressive (in my opinion) photo of the Bretagne, and my first WIP. I hope the BRETAGNE won't be as long to finish as the COURBET ;)

Cheers

Well... Actually I was, when I said so. I think I spent to much time finishing the Courbet. I started the Bretagne because I have a good base with the Courbet, and all the battleships I modelled so far went by two : Richelieu/Jean Bart, Bismarck/Tirpitz, Dunkerque/Strasbourg. Modelling the Courbet alone leaves me with a sense of "unfinish" (I-have-to-model-the-Bretagne... I-have-to-model-the-Bretagne... )...And that's just to good doing it on this forum ;) So Here I go !
... And by the way, here is a little update with a comparaison of the COURBET and BRETAGNE Hulls.

Nice to see another one mate - I notice the casemate arrangement is quite a bit different.

Looking forward to seeing more:)

Yes indeed, and that forces me to rebuild a great part of the hull (Tooooh !)
Here are 2 plans to show the differences.

Which one, Courbet or Bretagne? I'd have said Courbet was slightly closer - but Eross hasn't built in a large hole at the bow yet:D

Somebody has been reading the famous "Jutland's hilarious Before/After Photos Digest"... :D

Hmm, Archetype, I'm afraid the Courbet and Seydlitz have not much in commun... See the two pics. Jean Bart (Courbet sister ship) looks very much "pre-dreadnought" and Seydlitz has a real sharp battlecruiser look. The turrets, funnels and superstructures are really differents... That's my opinion... Maybe from far-far away... ;)

Hi all,

Here is a little update in the form of a comparaison of the hulls of the Courbet and Bretagne. I had to redesign a lot in the hull of the Bretagne as the bow is not the same, the portholes are located differently, casamates for the 5.5" guns have a much greater diameter than the ones on the Courbet and their layout is different, the main guns barrels are longer, and so on... I put them side by side. Personnaly, I prefer the Courbet, the superstructures are finer, and the 5.5" guns are located in a way that the overall looking of the ship is better. What do you think ? :)

 I prefer the Bretagne... Of course, I'm biased!

Obviously, I prefer the Seydlitz:D

Nice update Eross - I notice that the geometry on both Courbet & Bretagne is particularly heavy just behind the forecastle. Why is that?

That's because this parts is derived from a raw boolean operation. and needs to be dramatically refined to keep the hull's curve at the particular point. There may be a better way to do that, though.

hi all,

Here is an update mainly showing the torpedo nets and their supports, along the hull...

Looking good - not too keen on the highly reflective upper deck though. She's certainly coming together quickly mate!:)

Hi All,

Here is a update of the Bretagne with the superstructures in progress. I'm not very satisfied with the black turrets and guns, as they do not properly stand out. Nevertheless, If I trust my documentation, they have to be, as they were "painted" with a strange substance made of grease and charcol...

She is absolutely stunning. You are really getting the hang of doing these old veterans.
I sometimes think about trying to do some of the old Hochsee Flotte line ships and battlecruisers .... Lützow, Markgraf, Bayern.....

Well then you should, Nils... As long as you find proper references, blueprints and so on, getting hands on those "old veterans" is very rewarding. The "Dreadnought era" is so interesting, crowded with big, ansome ships with that particular "Dreadnought looking"... you really have the choice. Complete fleets to choose from. As compared with WWII,where you always have the same ships : Bismarck, Hood, King George V...

I prefer the K class cruisers of the late twenties and early thirties. :D

Another good update... hmm... now I'm starting to think about an RN pre-dreadnought... we shall see!

I agree with you Nils - but all I've got so far is some plans of Friedrich der Grosse, Von Der Tann and some of Bayern / Baden. I've probably got enough to have a stab at FdG but that's about it. Can't find very much at all on the Konigs - apart from an ICM model...

Nice update Eross - nice to see you sticking with your reference as opposed to going with artistic licence.

I don't want to steal Eross' thread so I posted some links to drawings @ Military Intel forum for those interested ;)

Hello !

No ! the Bretagne Project is not dead !... here is an update. The project is slowly reaching its end. I'll try to do my best to finish it as fast as possible, this time. Many decks elements have been placed, as weel as boats and cranes.

Great update - surprising to see how far forward they carried boats though; you'd think they'd get carried away!

Hi All !

... And Voilà !!. After quite a long time (soooooooooorry), here are the final renders of the Bretagne. She is now finished. I hope you'll enjoy them.
Modelling the lead ships of both the Courbet and the Bretagne classes, was long but really interesting process. I learned a lot about naval warefare of these days, about how France dealded wit the concept of "all big gun" ship, and about her place and strategy in the world just before WWI. Really interesting !

Anyway, time to go on for me, and I as said once on this forum, the Bretagne will probably be the last battleship I model, for quite a time. Giving up the Yamato is a sure thing, now, but I intend to model the Hood, one day. I will post it on this forum of course !!

Cheers

Superb work mate! Nice to see this one finished.

What are you going to be working on next? I remember you saying that you needed a break from battleships - is your next subject going to be military?

In fact I think I will put it on my wall :) if you could be troubled to do another side render now that it's done...?
