See krazycolin's post aboe for my reaction - This is AWESOME!

Thanks guys, you make me blush :)
The renders take around 2,5 to 3 minutes each. If I just render the panels I textured, it's about a minute. So that's very fast on my old crate.
And what a nice crate it is!
The panel edge's look a bit too weathered/strong to me but that's just my opinion.
I havn't played with the painting features in 201 as yet. I take it you sorted the problems you had with that?

Pig's in space...hehehe Yeah, the bump is a bit too much, still need to tweak that and figure how to channel the strength into distance as well. The problems I had with painting have not been sorted, but it seems to work "allright" for the spitfire. I wanted to texture the heinkel 111 first, but that one doesn't want to work. Will have to do that in photoshop.

Holy flying squirrels, that looks wicked!
Bump is indeed a tricky one. Up close it's over-the-top but from a distance it looks perfect. Does Modo support diastance blend (MAX does ;))?
Awesome work Wiek. Looking forward to updates! :)

I love modo 201. Played with it for a few hours, and I think I'll have to convert to it. Your render just further drives me to do so.
kiwi123
06-07-2006, 8:54 AM
I'm not so sure the renderer is THAT different from others, except the speed and micropoly displacement. Don't get me wrong, I like it. But I also know I'll have to keep on rendering stuff in Lightwave because there is no way to do animation in 201 (yet).
kiwi123
06-07-2006, 8:56 AM
Clanger: thanks, that means a lot coming from the spitfire master !
Gadzooks: this'll be part of dvd nr.2, first need to finish nr.1
To be honest, I do not know how much time is left for the spitfire and the dvds, right now I'm facing a situation where I'll have to look out for another job. That takes highest priority obviously.

So nice ! And perfect modelling. someone showed me a video of Modo 201, you could see the guy "painting" bumps maps directly on the mesh in Modo, are yours done like that ? really nice textures.
zarroun
06-07-2006, 7:20 PM
Not only can you paint bumps, but modo 201 also lets you paint your procedural onto your model, alowing you to fade from one prcedural to another. The best part about modo is the tools and workflow though.

This is so impressive Kiwi! Even though you only textured the nose of the plane it looks amazing, if you keep this quality on the rest of the plane it will look extremelly photoreal!

If you want a brown and green one later Martoc, no problem.
I basically started adding scratches to the body and tail. Cockpit and wings will be next. Once the scratches are done, time for the oil and dirt.

Superb job. Kiwi. Is the paint job from scratch in Modo or did you import any photo texture to start?
kiwi123
07-15-2006, 9:31 AM
Thanks guys ! There is one layer of photonoise texture for a sort of generic grain (separate material layer), but other than that all is painted in modo. Most of that is done with the airbrush with the default round brush. In the side view under the cockpit you can see some darker dirt, that is done with a custom brush.

Thanks Gareth, I'll never approach your texturing skills, but I can at least try to get past my usual level of shittiness....
Did the scratch/chip layer for the windshield frame, tried a new render, this one actually shows the work better than the previous renders. All rendered in modo as well by the way.

Great progress Wiek!
The wear around the fuel filler cap looks a bit odd ("hand painted") and the whole paintscheme a bit speckly, but other than that it's looking fab.

Kiwi, seems your friends have your ego well under control. Just in case our adulation gets too much.
kiwi123
07-21-2006, 7:58 AM
Hey guys, I said: I agree completely ! I was intending to tackle that bit around the filler cap as it annoyed me. The speckly stuff is a generic map that I applied to the whole plane just to dirty it up a bit in a quick way, that didn't work.
Skyraider3D
07-21-2006, 8:50 AM
Hehehe :)
What I sometimes do for wear areas is play with the Chrystalize and Median filters, with small values. It gives interesting random patterns, resembling paint chips.
By the way, if you make the specklemap very translucent but much bigger it may look better. About a meter sized patches or so.
PS. Spinner no worries :) I think Wiek realises that he's achieved such a level of quality and perfection that only nitpicking will get him further
kiwi123
07-21-2006, 9:22 AM
It's just a matter of painting it again, was too quick doing it. It's quite a surface to cover, the wingroots will be a lot harder to get right.

Hi Wiek.
2 quick questions about your spitfire:
1) I assume the panels on the front around the engine were modelled and not created with a bump map. can you confirm.
2) when you painted this guy, I assume you had to create a mask from the diffuse color map in order for the paint chips to reveal the underlying metal layer. Or maybe just increase reflection and specualrity in this areas.
In other words you have to paint different maps. Like you painted the diffuse color map, then painted a mask map where your paint chips had to go, painted a reflection/specularity map to enhance these where rust is showing around the rusted rivets. did i get this right?
thanks.
kiwi123
10-29-2007, 5:09 PM
Hi Yannick,
1) yes, they are modelled
2) I painted the chips in the color map and then copied them to the specular and reflection map.

Your work Kiwi is always impressive and I am a true fan. Since you are one of the forums Spitfire experts I thought you (or anyone else in the forum), would be able to answer this question. I have been doing research for a painting I would like to create about RCAF, 403 Squadron Fighter Ace F/O Stephen Butte.
Starting out on the morning of Jan 1, 1945 (Operation Bodenplatte) taking off from Brussels-Evere for a routine patrol and flying an early version of the Spitfire XVIe (looks more like a MK IX - no bubble top canopy plus has a Packard made engine) - he ran into a fighter strike groups II./JG 26, III./JG 26ripping up their airfield. Before he had chance to really retract his landing gear (not -to mention his drop tank would not drop off), he started firing at his attackers taking out three in that mornings fight.
I have at this time I have very incomplete side drawing of a Spitfire MK IX with a drop tank - mind you I have never seen one in any drawing or photograph before. I have put together two drawings; one an early MK XVI , the second a MK IX drop tank fused to the bottom of the aircraft - does this look correct to anyone??? If any one has any images or drawings would they please share with me, it would be a big, big help.
Thanks Dale

Hi Roshent,
The spitfire pictures are great - it's real nice collection, thanks I am going to download them for reference! The real problem I am having Roshent is not the MK XVIe spit in it's self - but the oddity of a spits drop tank. I need pictures of the "drop tank" that were used on this plane.

I would think you'd have to look for a slipper tank, one that's flush against the belly.
Sorry for not responding very fast, I don't frequent this forum as much as I used to.
macmullin
01-20-2009, 11:30 AM
Hi Kiwi,
With a little luck, I found a single picture of a slipper tank, it just so happened to be on a flying MK XVI. I also found other documents listing a number of different kinds of drop tanks that were used including wooden ones. The drawing in my earlier post seems to be what is referred to as a 70 Gallon Torpedo Drop Tank.
The most common as you mentioned seems to be the small or large "Slipper Tank". I can't imagine why it is called a "Slipper Tank" - it looks more like the shoe-box the slippers came in! I gather, the name came from the way in which the tank was attached to the bottom of the aircraft - it just slipped on.
