This is an F-16 i've been working on at work and at home for a while. I get to come back to it every few days or so and make progress. It's obviously still a WIP and still need touchups in the model, maps all those "little" details. Especially an interior cockpit & pilot.
The panel lines are rather inaccurate on the fuselage :) IRL there are access panels there with rounded shapes :) If you need them I can get you blueprints that accurately show these.

That would be great......I want as realistic panels as i can get.

Bummer i goofed on the panels there,.........spent a while painting them.
Based everything on this (.ai) file i DL'd from the Air Force website.

I like! do you just have a color map on it? And what size are your maps?

It's a diffuse map with a glossiness and specular map applied right now. And the maps are pretty big, 3000x3000 pixels. AS others are pointing out i need to revise my panneling a bit to be more accurate.

I DL'd some better blue-prints from http://www.airwar.ru/other/drawe.html
Hopefully these are a little more accurate,.....just wanted to see if anyone thinks i am on the right track with panels. Try to ignore the rest of the details as they will be changed soon,.....just wanted to get the new panel lines in there.

Looking at that same photo I posted and comparing, it sort of looks as though the US insigna on the wings and the back end are smaller on yours than in the photo. Could just be the angle I'm comparing them at though. Good looking mesh

Thanks! I'll be sure to check those insignias too. Still obviously an ongoing update for this model.

Another painting update!
In the end of this i really want a "used, dirty" look to this,...more character. Want it to look like panels and other parts were stripped from other 16s to be used as replacement parts for this one, and since it's in a combat situation, there'd be no time to keep it very clean-lookin...

your rivets are a tiny bit too big... do you have spec or any kind of shininess going on there? (not only on the glass)....

nah,.......no spec or shiny maps on there yet. i usually modify the final diffuse map to be the spec map after i am completley done with the diffuse.
The rivets may be a lil bigger than 100%,...but i really wanted them to stand out in my paint scheme,...any smaller than they are now may result in basically not being able to see them. But i also haven't found a good drawing/blueprint of te rivet positions. Basically shot from the hip a littel by using some ref photos where i could actually see a few of them.

Wow... Love your progress, its looking good! I agree with you about the rivets. I'm exaggerating mine as well just a bit to help them pop just a bit more. I don’t think it distracts at all.

I'm all too guilty about taking some creative licensing with certain things.
I think it does help them pop some-what, but Airborne was right,...they are a little bigger and completely on purpose.

texture update looks great, and although the rivets may be a little large, it does stand out and makes the whole texture look good.

While i agree with your choice... i do feel that it is possible to make your irvets the correct size and have them feel "real"...
here's two pics of my falcon.... i know that the tail is the wrong one for this block.. (but i did fix the nose, the cockpit and the intake...)
Dacattack
06-22-2006, 3:11 PM
You're right Krazycolin,.........but also at the same time i think you're thinkin the actual size of the rivets are the size at you see them in the pic and thats not exactly correct. In the map, supplememnting the rivet "dots" are an underlaying blur map with noise applied to it. So i'll see about tweakin that a littel bit. Given that you're right but i also have to consider the final output as well,.......
This model is going to be used in a video project and IMHO if the rivets are too small they'll not look effective. Take your 16 (which is awsome by the by)
, the wide angle shot you have looks almost like a badly aliased line instead of rivets,.....obvioulsy Hi-res or close ups make it quite clear but if that were an animated model and then after video fields separation and compression, it may not look as good,..........which has happened to me before.
One day soon after the model is done i want to render off a Hi res poster size imzge and hang it on my office wall,.....then i'll address the issue of getting them 100% accurate. And i do appreciate your critiques! Saw your site too,....that F14 carrier landing floored me it was so awsome!

06-22-2006, 3:17 PM
Flattery will get you out of the whole rivet thing.... :D
you are quite correct about the video fields. had that problem many times.
i'm letting you off with a warning...
keep up the good work.. have you done gear yet?
Dacattack
06-22-2006, 3:25 PM
No gear yet,..........dunno if i'll be abel to get to them, but i'd like to. Really need to get to the cockpit as far as modeling next.
I am currently lookin for a good ref image or blueprint so i can accurately determine "this panel has "X" amount of rivets" so i can get it 100%. So if you or anyone else lookin at this thread has such a drawing,...please throw it my way.

Here's some restarting painting on the underside of the 16. And it's been a while since my last post because a terrible stomach flu was workin it's way one by one through my family and i've been dealing with that. But like i said,..it's a start on the underside. Obviously need to start tweakin alot of the panel lines.

Thanks! I've actually decided a great way to use this model. My mentor is retiring in August, so what i am gonna do is finish this F16 and get a nice big print done and frame it with the very first pencil drawing of mine he ever critiqued (i was in 3rd grade) and put the two in the same frame. I think that'll be kinda cool! Showing him how his first influences made me to the point i am today.

Hey, guys,.....work's been m-u-r-d-e-r lately and i had just a few moments tonight to do a little detailing in my F-16. But here it is,...
Hello,
nice weathering on this one.
I think your nose is too small, it must at least go to the dotted line.

Sorry i have to tell you this but as a F-16 crewchief i have to tell that a lot of the panels you made are inacurate, maybe you should look on www.airliners.net or www.f-16.net for more accurate pic's to model from.

That is correct, the radome goes at a couple of inches aft of the angle of attack probes

it's a slow W.I.P.,.....but i am primarily working from a blueprint i downloaded from http://www.airwar.ru/other/drawe.html .
The gun barrel isn't even really worked on yet,......just a stretched sphere to just put something there for the time being.
