Hello all
I just joined the MilitaryMeshes. Finally a place for our hobby and fellow people who know their business.

Since I love military shooters and the military theme itself, I wanted to model and texture a weapon in my sparetime for a personal project.
Kind of tired of good ol AK-47, so I thought I give an AK-74 a try.

Even though early models came with wood, I thought the Plum Plastic of 1980's was always sexy. I also like the AK-74M folding stock, but I think I will do that one later on.

So here is a photo of a real thing

I was trying to model different versions for test. I first want to try an expensive geometry model to see how that will look in the engine. So I modeled one and kept the polycount under 7K.

So after 3 and half days i finished the model just under 8K
I also added extra neat things to the top cover for attaching some of the new Russian optics without the use of siderail.
Texturing was fun, because thats what I enjoy the most

so another 2 days, and finally I got the AK and KOBRA sight textured

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/1628/kobraa25ag.th.jpg (http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kobraa25ag.jpg)

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/7695/kobra3a9lw.th.jpg (http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kobra3a9lw.jpg)

Only thing that is left to finish is GP-30 grenade launcher. Which im working on now.
After that Im going try to get it in my friend's engine with shaders (i kept the difuse texture without any highlights)

Next step will be to try the Normal mapped version. Maybe 1K for AK model, and 1024 Normal map texture with details. I will see which version looks better without sacrificing too many resources.

thanks
Roman

That is one sweet model, and an even sweeter texturing job! The texturing looks incredible. Excellent job!

great texturing job on it, and nice model for being so low of poly's.

Very nice indeed! I've had to model weapons before through my work and absolutely hated doing it, which makes me really appreciate the realism and detail you've got in there.

WOW
I didnt expect that many compliments and on top of that a header!

thank you all for this!

More to come.
Right now Im working on the Dragunov Sniper Rifle (SVD), and than starting on PKM machine gun.
The reason I'm doing the Eastern block weapons, is because there are not that many in games that are done properly.

Anyways, thanks again guys!

thats some of the best weapon modeling and texturing i have ever seen! the textures are outstanding! did you have a ak close to hand or was it just photo reference?
