Hi to all,
As a result of the problem of the forum I repeat post.
Just a little bit of history:
The DESTRUCTIVE word, in English “destroyer” is Spanish, and that is used to name to this fundamental class of ships during century XX is not chance, but product of the tenacity of a Spanish sailor: the ship lieutenant Fernando Villaamil.
The proliferation of small, the quick and deadly torpedo boats put in a jam the fleets. A new type was needed ship able “to hunt” to the agile torpedo boats. The solution of the cruise was proven, but this one was too great to face so small ships and of as much agility on the sea. Spanish navy comisionó to Villaamil so that it studied a new type of “contratorpedera” ship that outside, on the one hand the quite small thing to be quick and maneuvering, and by another one the sufficiently robust thing to be used on the high seas in order to give protection to the square. And since the British shipyards were those that with more success constructed the torpedo boats, to them resorted Villaamil. In November of 1885, ours insigne sailor obtained that a contract with the shipyards of James and George was signed Thompson, of Clydebank, by value of 38,000 pounds sterling for the putting in launching slip of the ship that it had designed.
Our DESTROYER received its keel at the end of 1885, hurled in July of 1886 and listed in 1887. The results surpassed the most optimistic expectations. A new type of unit had been created, with the agility of a torpedo boat and the marine solidity of a cruise. The new Spanish ship was the referring one of the new “torpedo-boat destroyers” that after I GM were called already universally “DESTRUCTIVE”. The new ship had a normal displacement of 380 ton 4 boilers locomotive type fed 2 groups on alternative machines of triple expansion that moved two helices to 3,800 HP giving a speed of 22.6 knots. The Length was of 58.74 M.s the Sleeve of 7.63 M.s 2.50 Openwork and the freeboard 2.90 ms. The autonomy was of 5,500 miles to 10 knots and its armament was made up of 1 Hontoria tube of 90 mm 4 Nordenfeldt tubes of 57 mm, 2 Hotchkiss machine guns of 37 mm and 3 tubes Schwartzkopff torpedo launcher. Their dowry composed 60 men. Its delivery to the Navy provoked great expectations to the salary exhausted the Royal British Navy in praises to the ship. Reina Runs presided over the ceremony in the middle of 1887 in San Sebastián.
Immediately the race of the “torpedo-boat destroyer” in main navy began. One of the best examples was our 6 units of the class FUROR of 1896. Fast ships and armed, constructed in the British shipyards Thompson very well. Two of these magnificent units, FUROR y PLUTÓN, they were along with destroyed the square of admiral Cervera in the massacre of the 98. On board of FUROR Fernando Villaamil died, the father of the destroyer. 380 ton 28 knots. length 70 M.s Manga 6.8 M.s Calado 3 M.s 2-75 mm 2-57 mm 2 machine guns and 2 tlt-350 mm 65 men.
In this occasion my model is a tribute to one of first of these ships the “Destroyer Pluton" sunk 1/7/1898 en Santiago de Cuba next to the “Destroyer Furor", to the controlofthe ship lieutenant Fernando Villaamil, inventor of these ships.
