Hi there. I have a lot of troubles working on aircraft and I figured coming here would be a great way to learn how to start doing them properly. I want to model the F-22 for this project I'm making based on Ace Combat 4, and I'd like to have someone help me through all of it so I can work on other aircraft in the future.
Let me know if you can help. Thanks!

Anyone who can help? I need general tips on how to start and what to do first, etc...

Hi AK and welcome to MM. People here can help you with tips about the tricky aspects of 3D that requires a bit of inside knowledge but they can't help you if you have never used a 3D application before.
If you don't know where to start, have a look through the obstacle course in the sticky thread on 3D tips best of. There are numerous tutorials suggested in that thread and wealth of tips that have been give to me over the past 18 months or so which are max related. You need to sit down and do several tutorials before tackling your F22. That may take several months to complete.

I concur. I had to do a lot of studying up and 'trial and error' before I tackled my first project. There's some tutorials on the web, just Google it find them. I'd recommend tackling an easier subject than an F-22. A simple model builds confidence.:)

I posted you a welcome yesterday already, I thought. Did you ever see it? What happened to my post? Oh well...
In a nutshell, I said that I never thought I could model a plane either, but thanks to the great people here on MM I managed to learn enough. You should, if nothing else, read this thread from the Obstacle Course:

Good luck with your model, you can do it. Welcome to the site :salute:

I'm actually proficient in 3DS Max. ^^; It's just that I can't, for the life of me, get aircraft modeling down properly. It continues to elude me... and I've been working in 3D space for the past 11 years, since 1995 and Flight Simulator 5.0 with the Aircraft Factory add-on.

Thanks for the responses. I really want to learn how to do this properly, it's been a thorn in my brain for the past 10 years.
I'll definitely check out the tutorials here, and I'll try that P-38 tutorial in Max's help so I can get a better idea of what I'm doing. This F-22 is really important for the scene I want to do. I could easily design the massive hangar it's going to sit in, with enough details to blow your mind... but the moment I hit the plane, it's like a toddler trying to draw Impressionism. ^^;

Sorry AK, thought you were new to 3D but since you've been doing it a while you shouldn't have any problems. I suggest make a start on the plane and post a WIP. When you get stuck, just ask and someone maybe able to help.
I'd probably model the F22 like I do all my other planes 24 sided cylinder for the fuselage and 12 sided cylinders for the wings, tailplane and fins. I cut more detail into those cylinders as required as the shape develops.

My main issue is that I have crappy blueprints. You know where I can find some really high quality ones with cross sections and high resolutions? If I had that to work from, I think I could manage...

I've never seen blueprints for the F-22. Hard to come by good blueprints for modern aircraft. KrazyColin can possibly help you as he mainly models modern American aircraft. Perhaps send him a PM or email.

TaDA... here i am. blueprints for the Raptor are, sadly, CLASSIFIED. and as such, are totally unavailable. however... for your perusal, here's a pic that has (i believe) enough info to at least get started...

Note, there are some serious issues with even this... ah well...

Hell yeah. That looks a lot better than what I was using. Thanks a lot Krazycolin!
