challenger 1 mk3

A few work in progress shots of my latest tank, the mk3 is an up-armoured version of the standard challenger 1 tank.

Ive been wanting to model a good challenger for a while now, i did model a challenger2 ages ago, but frankly it was rubbish, so this time round im taking my time and doing it right.

Good job. Man, I so need to model some more armor. It's been too long.

I see you're texturing some as you go now? Perhaps so you won't negelct it in the end? ;)

Oh, and Archetype, do model the texture.. then, texture it anyway! :)

-JP who loves good texturing too! :)

Just a little progress update,

I still have to finish the turret, wheels & track, but its getting there...slowly.

The turret currently looks a little wierd in the rear shot as its missing its stowage boxes, also i may change that side basket thing to the solid box type as i dont like it.

+ that black bundle of stuff stuck on the armour skirt is supposed to be camo netting.

+ one slight mistake here, the turret is sitting a couple of inches too low which makes it look odd (to me anyway), that`ll be fixed.

i`ll post some wires when its done.

So, it's been a couple of days since you posted - have you finished it yet?(!)

All I can say is Wow. I'm looking forward to seeing the wires - especially of the mesh grilles. What's the face count?

well its done and it kind of sucks, i guess im just fed up with it after working on it for what seems a long time.
i forgot the wf shots, i`ll post them tomorrow if i remember (im not on my home `puter so cant grab them right now)
polycount is around 1.9mil.

Looking mighty fine there! Can we see a close up of that cammo net? When I made one back in the day for my LAV-25, it was something to ponder before modeling. I'd like to know/see how you tackled it!

That makes sense with the engine in the rear.
So the return wheel has cogs or not? Maybe in the track center-line?
The modelling is supurb. I'm interested in the detail shown, not saying its incorrect.

a few wires...

flakmonkey

the camo net started out as a 25*25 poly plane, i extruded a bunch of faces fairly randomly, then polysmooothed the whole thing, maya`s cloth sim was used to roll it up and drape it over the tank.

Thanks for showing the wires!

Do I assume correctly you used several cylinders for the grilles?

Yeah, pretty close to the way I did mine. Big rectangle, then I applied a huge net pattern with an alpha image and baked that in before I rolled it up. Then I rolled it up. :) No cloth sim though, just lots of tweaking.

love the wireframe.

Did you write a script to do the treads? looks like you have a toolbar button that looks like tanl treads.
