View Full Version : Seven Provinciën - 17th Century Dutch War Vessel
Hi, since my Batavia ship worked out better than I expected, I thought I could start making a 'real' warvessel.
This ship was active during all the Anglo-Dutch War's. It's most famous commander was Michiel de Ruyter. The ship served from 1665-1694.
Hope I can make a nice replica!

Nice start! What method did you use to build the hull and where did you get your reference from?
After Batavia I'm really looking forward to seeing this one progress.

Absolutely. A famous ship you don't see modelled often so this will be very interesting.
My reference are photographs from various museums, old drawings and paintings. There weren't any blueprints at the time so this is going to be a quess... ;-)
I'll try to keep you up to date as sharp as I can!

correct translation would have been seven provinces btw
I'm not translating.
The name has been spelled in various ways in the past and the present:
Seven Provintien
7 Provinciën
Seven Provinciën

07-10-2006, 5:07 PM
[edit - posted at the same time as me] I've always seen it as Zeven Provinciën
you got me! another name...
As I said... there are many ways to write down the name.
Martocticvs
07-10-2006, 5:22 PM
That version seems to make the most sense to me as the Koninklijke Marine (see - I never translate!) has a new class of frigate called De Zeven Provinciën class, named after the first ship of the class obviously (F802).
:\
This is a photograph made by me in a museum in Delft. It is an old miniature of the ship. (which I use as a reference)
But as I said.. in other historic sources the names vary.
I'm just showing you this so you know I'm not fooling you guys ;)

My guess is, you photoshopped that !
Here's some improvement.

love to see this one from the start now
Hmm..I'm guessing the stern is going to be fun to build!
Nice progress - any chance of a wire at this early stage? Please?
hehe.. the stern is indeed a challange! I'll post you some wires soon.
When I began this project I knew the ships challange would be all the decoration. So first let me build the basic lines before I get to the tiny parts :)
In this update the main shapes are getting pretty clear now... hope to update you guys again before the weekend!

Is it just me or is there a slight wobble or even just a flat spot on the main wales there?
Looking great all the same!

Whats the dimensions on that ship?
Can you tell me the rough mast diameter at deck level, too please?
I'm trying to get my head around scale, visualise a crewman on board.
indeed, stern carvings will be a lot of fun... looking forward to it
the dimensions are as follows
the main mast (from the bottom to the top) is 58 meters.
the whole length of the ship is 60 meters
the width 15 meters
the diametre of the main mast is 0.5 meters
hope I gave you an idea

No I'm not dead! I was just very very busy! :)
Here's another update, some of the rigging has been done, and the extra's on the bow.. the carvings.. There's still a lot to be done, so I'll return to my ship again!
Bye!

Fantastic! One slight crit though - the rails (not sure what to call them!) look as if they could do with a bit more smoothing - but you did say there is a lot left to do.
Looking forward to the next update!
P.S. It looks much better in grey than in the various colours it was in!

Awesome. Plain awesome!
But why are the gunports underneath the whales?
He just hasn't interrupted the wales yet. It was perfectly normal for the gunports to intersect the wales at the stern, take a look at HMS Victory, and you can see that it was still normal a century later (and well into the 19th century in fact). http://www.prdobson.com/album/hms-victory/photo/77/
I am quite busy rigging the Batavia (which I made earlier). The idea is to get this ship in a storm..
So I'm a bit consumed by the work of realizing that :)
Martoc seams to have answered some questions on my behalf :D thanks for that!
The carvings are done in Modeler and shaped up with Zbrush. One of the shields is indeed in an angle, I don't know why, but it is on the original design. Probably they thought it would be a bit dull to put all the shields in the same symetrical order. (i like it though)
The shields represent the seven provinces of the Netherlands in that time.
And a happy newyear, and a lot of modelling fun in 2007!
Don't get me wrong mate, I like the fact that one of the shields is at an angle too - I just wondered why.
Good luck rigging the Batavia!:D

Looking very good! What's the poly count so far, might I ask?
Probably stupid question, but.... Are you sure that it is UVunwrappingable?
Seriously, I would love to see it textured...
Many years ago I started to build model of "Peredystynacya" (Destiny) vessel, designed by russian tzar Peter I (The Great). Not virtual but real - wood, cords, canvas etc. Only half of the hull was built then and I stoped work by the lack of time.
BTW. I'am not in 100% sure, but as family legend said my great grandfather was in 1/2 Dutch:cool:

Just one word..... WOW!
The polycount so far is around 790.052 poly's, and yes everything is UV unwrapped :)
mrys: The good old Tzar Peter was inspired by the dutch marine that time, due to that several dutch words have been adopted in the russian language. Maybe this project will put you back on yours again ;)
Hope to give you another update soon!

Martoc, I heard of the fire on the Prins Willem when I was on vacation, not too good indeed. But on the other hand I was very curious about it, it was beautiful to see such a ship on fire. It actually gave me the inspiration to get back on this project again.

Presumably you haven't finished with the fore and aft sails there yet, as they are still a bit... stiff looking :)
Besides what Ronnie says, I would suggest fiddling with the material settings a little so that you get the appearance of some light being transmitted through the sail cloth... as the light is striking the front of the sails of course you're only going to notice that effect where they are in shadow for whatever reason.
Otherwise looks good, although look at how the various ropes that pass from the foot of the sail up to the yard across the front would affect the shape of the sail :)
I have to tease you with these images... I'm sorry...
The sails still need a lot of work. Actually, I will make them in a basic pose, so later on I can make a real mess out of them. But that is something for over time... for now I have to finish this ship!
Enjoy!
