just started a first tank and i'm kinda wondering how you ppl make the weld seams between the plates ? bump maps or some kind of modeled welds do'nt want to have to restart a hole piece cuase i done somethin wrong :rolleyes:

I read somewhere here in this forum about using renderable splines with a bump or displacement map. Do a search for it(though it could have been posted in the old forum)

The way I'm doing it is by modelling a shallow trench for the seam and making a bump map to create the welds. I'm not saying that's the right way...

Here is a quick little example of a way to do welds. I saw a tutorial somewhere on how to do it in max but I can' remember where I saw it at.
Make a simple object where you want the weld.

Then add a meshsmooth modifier and convert it back to an editable poly and add a noise modifier.

Hate to disappoint you Jamie, but that's quite an early render - current progress is that the 88 barrel & mantlet have been UVed!

Somewhere I saw a tutorial that had better settings that looked tons more acurate but tha's the basic gist of it.
I'm still trying to dig up that turtorial and I'll post it once I do.

That is the EXACT tutorial I was alking about. It's the one I based example off of......his turns ou allot better too.
