I'll repost all the images so far for this project here now. I haven't done anything to this for a little while now, but then I haven't actually done much 3D at all for the last few weeks as I'm trying to finish off a wooden ship model I have on the go (I'll post photos when she's done). When I get going again on this it will be to do the frames.

Cool start on a Viking longship. Are those trees surrounding the drydock?

Viking Longboat? hehe no this is a 74-gun third-rate ship-of-the-line. The 'posts' surrounding the building slip are called standards, and are used for supporting the walkways of the scaffolding (which I will not be showing) used to afford access to the upper regions of the hull whilst building.

Oops. My bad........
:p :p
The large curved keel reminded me of a Viking longboat.
Sorry. :p :p

Yeah so am I! I've been juggling too many things lately though so I'm just concentrating on one thing at a time to get them out of the way, then I'll be back to this. And the Walrus, which I haven't forgotten!!

Nice to see this back, Paul. Try to find a bit more time to progress on this as I think its fascinating to watch you build a ship being built!

nice i really like the "under construction feel to it... just so you know, im gonna keep a close eye just to make sure your not just taking pictures of a ship being reconstructed and your photoshopping the pictures :P

I really like this idea. My question is, are you going to contruct the ship exactly with the same sequence they would have at the time? Keel, ribs etc.... If you do, I would suggest putting people(or something of reconizable scale) in the scene if possible. Having visited a few ships of sail, it was very often deceiving the scale of these ships until you are standing right up close. Fine craftmanship!
:salute:

That's not a bad idea at all. I might knock up a quick low-ish poly character to have down there then.

Wonderfull detail. How do you show/highlight the scarf joints.?

They are all done by making the item in one peice to start with, and then slicing through in the appropriate places to create the needed geometry. Then I physically split the object up into different pieces - ie for the keel I split alternatating scarfs off from the original object into a new object, and capped the ends in both objects (ie there are now two keel objects, each with alternating sections). Then I just bevelled the edges and applied the wood material to both objects - making sure that it is not applied exactly the same for the two - ie one of them is displaced slightly compared to the other.
And that felt remarkably like a prod hehe. Expect some kind of progress on this sometime soon - I'm intending to start working on the frames pretty soon after the long break I've had from 3D in general.

That was not a prod
Frames are fun!:p
Just did 50 plus pairs then found out, after reviewing the plans---again, I had the wrong dimensions for the keel and had not stopped them at the covering board. Oh well!! At least now I won't have to experiment to find a good way to do them.
I built up my keel rather than cutting.

OK! I'm back at it on this one at last! This is just a render testing new textures and lighting... the lighting is not right yet (this has been PP'd because it was very cold and dark initially... need to get the balance right in the morning).
Anyway, although nothing appears to have changed on the model, there has been some progress made on the frames, and I shall begin cutting them up fairly soon I hope. I need to get the lighting right first though, as I am making a lot more renders than I show here, all from a fixed position, to use as a building animation - so changes in lighting all the time will be a bit jarring. Good to be back on this one finally though! (And KGV will probably be textured in a month or so).
Very nice - this will be good to watch:)
What ever happened to the ship modelling tutorial?

nice to see you back on this one.. i had to google the ship and now where i know how it looks...hehe much fun on it....would you make it high detail?
Martocticvs

Yes I'm planning on making her pretty high detail... some of these timbers won't be seen much once planking is applied so they will not always be very high detail themselves, but once I move on to internal fittings then the detail level will increase accordingly. And the idea is to model this ship in exactly as she would have been built - the end result of this project is an animation showing the ship being constructed from keel up.
As for the ship modelling tutorial - I had, I'm sorry to say, forgotten about it... I shall put something together when I get the chance though!

I was playing with the idea of making the tutorial as I go with this ship - I even made a start to it... but I found that what I'm doing with this ship means that I break from my normal method pretty quickly so I'd have to be building 2 ships - so for now it's on hold but I did promise to do it and so I will.
As for Bellona, well, she is progressing - under wraps for now. Because I'm rendering out that series of renders for the build-up anim, I need to do quite a lot of work sometimes before I can show anything - in this case I need to build the hull before I can start showing any of it. So I'm currently working flat out making the frames - I should finish that process this weekend or early next week (I think the cant frames are going to annoy me a bit) and then updates will start appearing again - proper updates this time, not just the same thing but with a different lighting rig! (Although the lighting rig IS different now... again.... hehe). Stay tuned; my shoulder aches.
