Well, I'm not well versed in Max, but it looks like you're on the right track, you just need to play with the following: Diffusion, Relection, Specularity, and Glossiness. In real life, adding your reflection and diffusion values together should give you a 100% value, but that varys depending on the angle you're viewing it at (look up fresnel effects.) and what actually looks "good," which is almost never what is "real."

I looked around and found a good explaniation of fresnel effects. I don't know how well this will translate into Max, but I found it very interesting as to how shiny metal surfaces work in the real world.

Skyraider outlines his tips for creating a realistic aluminium finish in the obstacle course. See "3D tips best of". His P51 is one of the best aluminium finishes I've seen. There is also some tips on aluminium finish in the F104 WIP thread.
