View Full Version : Why planes?

Why are most people here interested in planes? Vehicles get some attention and ships get the least, but the hangar is always active. Any particular reason?

Hmm... I think partly it is to do with the amount of time it takes to make the various things...
Planes in general are smooth shapes with not a massive amount of detail actually needed to make it look right (obviously you can detail them to hell and back if you're so inclined)... vehicles like tanks are generally more detailed in general appearance, but are still fairly compact in size so not much of a problem to build, and ships are just massively detailed, and massive in size, so they take a long time and a lot of commitment to make, and they also require the person making them to be a complete nutter. Apparently I'm more than qualified if you go by the last bit there!

I think Paul's hit the nail on the head. Just look at how long most people seem to take to build a respectable plane mesh. About 2 months give or take. My Type 23 has been ongoing for almost 2 years (if you include the previous version, even the current version is over a year old). Paul's KGV took the best part of 18 months, as did his Agamemnon. Archetype's Graf Zeppelin has been going for a long time too.
I'd have to agree about the nutter side of things too!

Why planes? I fly virtual 302 squadron many time (3000 hours in air...) :) http://scores.wbfree.net/cgi-bin/wbstat.cgi?type=f&showplayer=k-azan&tod=current

I like planes

I would think vehicles are easier because planes have a much more fluid shape that is mroe difficult to model. I am wishing I had started on a vehicle first.

Airplanes are how girls, beautiful shapes have ;)

Planes are cool!
well, the rest of the stuff is cool too. maybe it just reflects the general amount of interest in each subject. I don't know. I think many people like planes ships and armor. I personally don't think planes are easier to build. Each subject has it's own difficulties.

Oh for sure. I didn't mean to suggest that planes are easier, its just that there's much less plane than ship. Ships just take a lot longer to build because there's so much more stuff. In reality, you can be detailing the things until you're old and grey and probably still have a few things you've missed off here and there. It's not so much about difficulty, as time.

Assuming its not a commissioned piece, I think people generally model subject matter that inspires them.

Yep, personal interest rules, IMO.
There is a sliding scale of dificulty in intergrating the model into a scene too. IMO this works to encourage aicraft before land and sea modelling, too.

2 months for a plane... I wish  ;)
Although I agree it takes less time to make a plane than it takes to make a fully detailed battle ship (well it's a fact, really), the main answer is simply love for the subject matter. Race cars are more popular than planes again, and characters are more popular than cars. Don't ask me why, planes work fine for me ;)

I did say two months for a respectable plane mesh Ronnie. Yours aren't respectable:)

No, yours are walk-on-the-other-side-of-the-road kind of things really... - if you have an inferiority complex that is hehe
I really agree with Spinner's comment as far as putting the model into an environment.
My interest really lies with the High Seas Fleet & Kriegsmarine, so why haven't I built any ships? Because I don't really know how to. I would say planes and ships are considerably more difficult to build than a tank for example.
Thought I'd add my opinion on this matter and I look forward to all your help when I do attempt something other than a tank! Please.:D

i also think its a reference matter tbh
you cant just find decent prints on the internet of any ship you want
but u can go a long way on prints for airplanes

So my planes are depressing then?
OK, I agree... the Corsair is depressing me a lot. I'll try to get on with it tonight or I'll never finish it!

At least you guys have the software to model.
Its over 10 business days since I paid for Foundation and its not shipped yet.
Honestly, pot is distributed more professionally than CGI software in this country!

Make a plane out of pot then and smoke the bandit! :p

Yeah, I modelled
but
I didn't inhale!
They sent me an email today, saying this isnt so bad. When they sold Maya it was a minimum of 6 weeks. I'm just so glad I'm not under any deadline. It'd be a nightmare if you were a small indie house, freelance or similar.

A guy who was running an architectural company had huge problems with his AutoCAD license. AutoCAD wouldn't start. It took Autodesk two months to fix it. Needles to say he had switched to w***z by then and didn't look back either. What can you expect... :(

well considering it took the better of 6 months for me to continue my GZ try to beat that :D
Well, Archetype, I CAN beat that!!!! As Martocticvs can attest, I have been trying to finish my USS Constitution for over 3 YEARS! An old sailing ship is far more organic, or curvelinear in it's makeup than a modern ship, which is mostly all straight angles...
You know the quote in one of John Lennon's last songs..."Life is what happens, when you're busy making other plans..." is too true. All the stop and starts because of jobs, living arrangements, moving, etc., I have done the past 3 years, I am no further along than I was when I started... (some of you may remember Paul's thread of HMS Agamemnon on Sci-Fi Meshes a few years ago...I dropped in a couple of WIPs of Ol' Ironsides that are still at the same stage...) Very sad, since I seem to have to relearn Cinema 4D every time I want to work on my ship...
So Archy....be thankful you are as far along as you are! I am sooo envious of the talent you guys have..... :(
