Hi, PZL_11_C, welcome to Military Meshes!

It is a very difficult (perhaps even impossible) question to answer. The program you choose to use depends very much on your personal preference - the way in which you like to work, as well as the sorts of things you're looking to do.

The main programs that are used most commonly here are 3DS Max, Lightwave, Cinema 4D, Maya, modo and Blender - of which Blender is free and good place to start if you're new to 3D. At the end of the day you just have to pick an application and see how well it suits your working style.

I think it depends on what you'll do with it. I use Cinema 4D, it has a user-friendly surface and through some tutorials you'll learn it as well. There is a temporary unlimited demo on Maxon Homepage (http://maxon.net), maybe you start some practise and tell us your impression. Also Cinema 4D is one of the cheapest 3D-modeling tools at the market. I think Maya or 3DS would be very expensive.

The problem with cinema 4d is its lack of NURBS modeling tools. It really makes it a pain in the ass in some cases. But, I agree with the fact that it probably has the easiest user interface to work with. My biggest gripe with maya was the inability easily customize the layout.

there are people who have started in max/lightwave and maya

its a long road to travel but you wont be confronted with the hassle to switch tools when you've outgrown your needs
