Hi,

this is my first post on this excellent website. This is how the SMS Von der Tann would have looked at the beginning of her career in 1911. The model is made in Max and is about 1,7 million polygons.

Very impressive model Scupper, and a nice intro for yourself! :) 1,7 Mi polygons is not much I think for that amount of detail.

Thank you both for your kind welcome! I always try to keep the polygon count as low as possible. I hope sometime to change the model to how the ship looked at Jutland with torpedo nets and superstructure changes.

Hello Seydlitz

Thank you, glad you like the model. I am at present working on the SMS Lützow which is nearly finished. The SMS Gneisenau is a older model and needs more work and the SMS Seydlitz is under construction.

Hello Scupper.
I like your render very much. It is good to see some beautiful models of Imperial Navy ships. von der Tann is a good looking ship and your detail shows her off very well.

Hey very cool subject, good to see these old beauties come to life.
The Von der Tann and Lützow are also my personal WW1 favorites, which I have done several pen and ink sketches of during the years, here two that I'd posted on the 2D sketch gallerie here.

Victory, Argyll, Nils,

thanks allot, I am pleased you all like the model.

Your drawings are excellent Nils! I would love to see you do some more ships of the Kaiserliche Marine. How about the SMS Moltke, she was also a fine looking ship.

Yes, Moltke and Göben (later Turkish navy; Sultan e Selim) were fine battlecruisers, in fact they were scaled up Von der Tann's more or less. But the peaks among the battlecruisers must have been the Derfflinger class (Lützow, Derfflinger and Hindeburg). Fast, sleek, elegant and adequate protected. Indeed the ultimate WW1 battlecruisers.

dawestsides and Viktor Thanks allot !

Nils....I can only agree with you completely, the Derfflinger class were excellent ships. It would also have been interesting to see how the Ersatz Yorch and Mackensen class would have looked. That would make a interesting 3D project.

Two more renders, this time orthographic views. I didn't make the underwater torpedo tubes on this model.

Best regards to all

This is such great work, really great model(s). I have the plans ready for the unlucky flagship, Friedrich der Grosse. I might give it a try... :)

That's an impressive amount of detail particularly considering the lack of clear photographs and drawings available for these ships. As Joep said, 1.7m polygons is not a lot for these things! Very nice work.

Thanks Lukem,

I made the model of the Tann from a original set of drawings, slightly faded. Many of these drawings can be bought from the BA/ MA in Freiburg. You can find the PDF catologue here: http://web.me.com/ingura/igkm-eng/Miscellaneous.html The IGKM site also has some excellent photos.

I think I have seen more photos of the Von der Tann than any other German ship. Unfortunately many of these are in private collections though some are online: http://www.u54.suedholland-ferienhaus.de/index.html

As far as modeling is concerned I am a bit old fashioned. I don't use Nurbs, never really learned how. It's all polygon modeling. All modified primitives that will not be seen close up like rivets, ropes, chains are kept simple. Up until now all the ships have been under 2 Mill poly's which is manageable. This way it should be OK to have two different ships in the same scene.

Thank you my friend on to broach the subject, but I think that the vessels in the past to the present day is the same ship and did not change and why the piece is the cost of ships, Eshrkat, which makes ships are you taking the form of old ships and produced only by the introduction of new technology out, how a company produced a recent ship to this day??? I do not think, not sure of this information If the ship of Germany or Russe or U.S. ships, I think a little bit similar in shape Sapfa ships were small, not large and the sharp corners on nook acute disappeared
I hope that my message and have your link, even if something just because I do not have the finest in this area

First off, thank you very much for the link to plans. I've been relying on the 'Vom Original...' series of books for drawings - this is what my very much embryonic model of Bayern is currently based on (very early days, and fairly low on the list of priorities...).

My Scharnhorst must be hitting 2 million already....

Regarding modelling - it's great to hear from someone else who isn't hooked on nurbs modelling! It's useful, granted, but with WYSIWYG modelling, you always know where you are in my opinion.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with next!

amazing, looks like a picture - have to ask how you did the ocean texture?

scupper

Thanks echo419,
the sea is just a plane with a Mental Ray/Arch and Design texture. I suggest the
best way to learn how to set this up is to look for a You Tube tutorial. I did a search
for "Mental Ray sea surface" and found one strait away.

Scupper, another great model you have done. Guess I noticed your Lutzow first which is my favorite too. But that doesn't mean this Von der tann is less attractive. Just love them.

One short question, what tool you use to make the those magnificent ships?
