Just came across this awesome picture... hero at work:

Perhaps I should make landing gear for my Corsair and do some character modelling, cause this could make a great piece of 3D art!

There is actually a whole sequence of photographs of this well documented event....don;t remember where I saw them all. Both the guys survived this. I have seen pictures from before this one as well as after where the wreck is pushed over the side I think.

And yes you are right, a great (and rare) moment for a fantastic render.

Did a search for Hellcat crash etc. but only this pic seems to come up. Did find more about it though and updated the link in the first post.

I cant connect to any .mil sites here, so cant see your pic.
Is it the famous one from the Enterprise where the cat officer is rescueing ensign Johnson?
If so I too have seen the pics in a book on the carrier. I'll try to work out where.

If you can stand the sight of bent up airplanes, Bent and Battered Wings USN/USMC damaged aircraft 1943-1953, Jim Sullivan, Squadron Signal ISBN 0-89747-182-2 is a good choice, published 1985. Can't find this one, but there are scores of others in it, including profileviews by Don Greer.

That's the one Spinner.
Thanks for the tip, Roshent. Reminds me of another amazing pic of a Hellcat ablaze. It's a side on pic of a Hellcat ablaze on the deck. You can see the skin warping due to the heat and the pilot shielding himself against the flames. Can't seem to find the pic though.

Here's some others tho':

Oh wow, that takes some grandes cojones. It would be an interesting render to say the least, what with the flames and twisted metal and all.

yup, that helped, and it's in the bent and battered book.
Additional info (photosubscript)
This F6F-3 (66101) Hellcat of VF-6 (Det) piloted by LT (jg) A. W. Magee landed aboard USS COWPENS with his belly tank ablaze. The fire was out in 1,5 minutes, with Magee out well before that. 24 November 1943

There is an additional picture of it just before hitting the deck with it's bellytank on fire.

Very "nice" picture, and yes your Corsair burning like that would make a great piece of 3D art ;) !
I'm so bad in charactere modeling otherwise I would try :(
