This is a fictional ship, but based on current technology. So I hope you won't mind if I post this here instead of SFM.
Mirai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDG-182_Mirai) basically is a Kongo class (Japanese version of the Arleigh Burke), but unlike the real Kongo class she is 10 meters longer to allow for a hangar (much like the later real improvements of the Arleigh Burke class) and she retains the offensive capabilities of the US models.

Nice start! This belongs here, it is not so far SCI-FI yet, at least I guess it does not have the capability to fly into space ? :D

Thanks, guys!
This belongs here, it is not so far SCI-FI yet, at least I guess it does not have the capability to fly into space ? :DIt becomes more of an "alternate history" story after a while since it's similar to the old movie "The Final Coutdown", but unlike the Nimitz they're stuck in the past.
Apart from that the only science fiction element is one of the craft stored inside the hangar (not sure if I'll build that one as well since there are no orthos available):

As you can see from the attached image there was conflicting reference material of what a Kongo class looks like below the waterline. So I had to settle for a more general sonar bulb (which won't be seen in 99% of all cases anyway).
I'm glad I'm not the only fan of the show around here. It's a shame the show never finished the story (I yet have to get my hands on the complete manga to see how it ends).
BTW: There's a movie which was partly filmed aboard a real Kongo class vessel but so far I haven't found more than the following scene: http://video.fc2.com/content.php?kobj_up_id=20080814dGx4wwZB
Not much progress a few hours later since I've mostly been collecting close-up reference material and worked on details which aren't visible at these distances/angles.
At least I found good references of the model kit to allow me to work from Arleigh Burke references and still stay true to the Mirai's modifications: http://blog.roodo.com/nautilus/archives/8395465.html
Might even give the Umidori a try once the ship is finished. Not as good as orthos but these shots of the model kit are the next best thing: http://picasaweb.google.com/sfscalemodels/MVSA32JUmidori#

Thanks again.
Unfortunately it seems like so far only the first ten chapters of the manga series have been translated into English (= 1st volume complete and only 1 chapter from the 2nd volume).
As I mentioned above I've found better images of the model kit to get the general proportions and make it a more "accurate". Apart from that most changes won't be visible unless you know where to look.
1st volume complete and only 1 chapter from the 2nd volume
that too bad, though perhaps all volumes of Zipang translated in Chinese language for Taiwanese.
Do you check herehttp://www.mod.go.jp/msdf/formal/gallery/index.html
or search with this Japanese word こんごう you may found more image for
your model.
Anyway I am just Zipang fun.Not naval ship enthusiast keep up good work:)
Cheers

Thanks!
Unfortunately apart from English and German I only speak some Japanese (barely enough to manage to order a cup of coffee and tasks like that). Still doesn't mean that I'll give up hope that someday there'll be an English translation.
The most frustrating part is to find fitting references for the details in my over 900 images of the Arleigh Burke and her derivatives, since every ship differs from the others (even within generations of the platform). And the show isn't always consistent in how the ship is detailed either.
This is not so much a small update as a miniature tutorial.
In case you're using Max and mental ray you might want to look into using the "Landscape" procedural map type to bring some color into your clay renders. In the attached image I've put a second Landscape copy into one of the channels (separate the black section into black & red) but I'm sure you get the idea.
PS: Ignore the "Spread" value. That's just left over from a different experiment.
