Crysis Sandbox 2 - Type 23 HMS Westminster
ok where to start ?
aha the beginning , ok!
A few weeks ago before xmas , i was preparing to model a type 23 frigate HMS Norfolk,for the pc game crysis , for my personal use in the crysis sandbox 2 game editor.
I own a copy of the Jecobin set of plans for this ship , which i have scanned.
I answered a thred posted by John Marchant seeking blueprints of Hms Daring , the new type 45 royal navy ship , which i also own a set of scanned blueprints of ,also jecobin drawings ,anyway myself and John spoke on private message about stuff ,and i downloaded and viewed his very nice 3d model of his type 23 Hms Westminster , which is a free download on the forum here.
I asked for ,and was kindly granted permission by John Marchant to use his 3d Westminster model ,and was given permission to amend it in any way i wanted , for fun usage in the crysis pc game engine using the sandbox 2 game editor .
so the purpose of this thred is to reveal what i have been working on , and amending !
A big thanks to John for his genorosity and trust in letting me have free range on using and amending the model , i hope he is pleased with what i am presenting below .
This is the 1st time John will have seen the project ,so this is the reveal to both him , and the wider audience .
John asked me to make this public , personally i was happy to keep it private , so blame John ! - lol
Personally i am really pleased with the conversions :-)
Before i describe what i did to John's model , and why , a brief synopsis of what i like to do
- 3d is my hobby , i model 3d stuff for crysis sandbox 2 editor as my hobby , normally my own original 3d models , made from mounted drawings etc
note the LCAC hovercraft in the screenshots below , is one of my original 3d models !
- i am 42 married , with 2 young daughters , i 3d model most nights 10pm to midnight , my free time !
- i am not a professional 3d dude , i just like to make new 3d models , which are my toys for playing with in crysis )
i used to do a web site dedicated to pc game simulation screenshots , so i do like to take screenshots , and enjoy being the virtual camera man )
ok enough about me , what i did to John's 3d model mesh as follows -
For what i call the vanilla version , John's real life type 23 design i made the following changes

1 went all over the mesh and removed all the little 3d ladders from the ship , as not needed by the player in the game , can always skin / paint on the removed ladders as detail at a later date ,There were quite a few ladders so this helped reduce the polys !
2 went over all the ships railings / fences , and reduced them from 3 bar gates to 2 bar , still looks cool , polys reduced !
3 i reduced substantially the helicopter landing pad special railings , now much lower poly , look good for the game , and perfectly acceptable and functional i feel )
4 i completely remade the bridge building , shelled it , and recut the windows as appropriate !

5 added some 3d props made by crytek from the sandbox 2 editor to the model , notably , the door frame and door to bridge x 2 , also placed and decorated both floors of the bridge building , with some stairs , various computer consoles , and steering wheel etc
note the player can enter the 3d model in the game , model is fully physicalised and shelled appropriately to make this possible !

The bridge building obviously is not a true representation of the real bridge internal layout of the ship in real life , i have no ideas on such matters !
what has been done is for fun 3d representation within the pc game !
6 i remade the entire hull , reducing some cross sections cuts , reduced the polys !

7 i remade the bulbous hull nose bulge , and made it a bit rounder and smoother )

For my version of the type 23 , i used my imagination and created Type 23 Well Deck version , i added these additonal changes
8 added a simple but effective well deck to the rear of the ship , with railings , a raised dock , some ladders , and a draw bridge type rear well deck door to the ship )

9 added CIWS gatling gun defence x 2 to the ship in place of the side guns

10 added a sparrow rocket launcher to the roof at rear of ship

11 removed the little rescue boats , as no need for them with the well deck facility
note 9 & 10 are crytek made assets from the sb2 editor added to the ship )
Both versions of the ship , have been exported to the crysis pc game engine , sandbox 2 editor as 4 separate .cgf format models , each cgf can be approx 40000 polys , each cgf section has an identical pivot point , so when in sandbox 2 it is really easy to slide the 4 sections of the model together to
recreate the whole , and the model can be permanently fixed together in editor with a few mouse clicks )

Personally i am really pleased with how good this model looks and performs in crysis , very little detail has been sacrificed in its conversion and export to the game )
In the future i would like to uvw and skin it approriately , and have the ship in game , drivable , with the possibility of controlling and conducting ship to shore naval bombardment ! :-)
Anyway enough said , John i really hope you like it , and enjoy the visuals )
