Crysis Sandbox 2 - Type 23 HMS Westminster

ok where to start ?
aha the beginning , ok!

A few weeks ago before xmas , i was preparing to model a type 23 frigate HMS Norfolk,for the pc game crysis , for my personal use in the crysis sandbox 2 game editor.
I own a copy of the Jecobin set of plans for this ship , which i have scanned.

I answered a thred posted by John Marchant seeking blueprints of Hms Daring , the new type 45 royal navy ship , which i also own a set of scanned blueprints of ,also jecobin drawings ,anyway myself and John spoke on private message about stuff ,and i downloaded and viewed his very nice 3d model of his type 23 Hms Westminster , which is a free download on the forum here.

I asked for ,and was kindly granted permission by John Marchant to use his 3d Westminster model ,and was given permission to amend it in any way i wanted , for fun usage in the crysis pc game engine using the sandbox 2 game editor .

so the purpose of this thred is to reveal what i have been working on , and amending !

A big thanks to John for his genorosity and trust in letting me have free range on using and amending the model , i hope he is pleased with what i am presenting below .

This is the 1st time John will have seen the project ,so this is the reveal to both him , and the wider audience .
John asked me to make this public , personally i was happy to keep it private , so blame John ! - lol

Personally i am really pleased with the conversions :-)

Before i describe what i did to John's model , and why , a brief synopsis of what i like to do

- 3d is my hobby , i model 3d stuff for crysis sandbox 2 editor as my hobby , normally my own original 3d models , made from mounted drawings etc

note the LCAC hovercraft in the screenshots below , is one of my original 3d models !

- i am 42 married , with 2 young daughters , i 3d model most nights 10pm to midnight , my free time !

- i am not a professional 3d dude , i just like to make new 3d models , which are my toys for playing with in crysis )

i used to do a web site dedicated to pc game simulation screenshots , so i do like to take screenshots , and enjoy being the virtual camera man )

ok enough about me , what i did to John's 3d model mesh as follows -

For what i call the vanilla version , John's real life type 23 design i made the following changes

1 went all over the mesh and removed all the little 3d ladders from the ship , as not needed by the player in the game , can always skin / paint on the removed ladders as detail at a later date ,There were quite a few ladders so this helped reduce the polys !

2 went over all the ships railings / fences , and reduced them from 3 bar gates to 2 bar , still looks cool , polys reduced !

3 i reduced substantially the helicopter landing pad special railings , now much lower poly , look good for the game , and perfectly acceptable and functional i feel )

4 i completely remade the bridge building , shelled it , and recut the windows as appropriate !

5 added some 3d props made by crytek from the sandbox 2 editor to the model , notably , the door frame and door to bridge x 2 , also placed and decorated both floors of the bridge building , with some stairs , various computer consoles , and steering wheel etc

note the player can enter the 3d model in the game , model is fully physicalised and shelled appropriately to make this possible !

The bridge building obviously is not a true representation of the real bridge internal layout of the ship in real life , i have no ideas on such matters !
what has been done is for fun 3d representation within the pc game !


6 i remade the entire hull , reducing some cross sections cuts , reduced the polys !

7 i remade the bulbous hull nose bulge , and made it a bit rounder and smoother )

For my version of the type 23 , i used my imagination and created Type 23 Well Deck version , i added these additonal changes


8 added a simple but effective well deck to the rear of the ship , with railings , a raised dock , some ladders , and a draw bridge type rear well deck door to the ship )

9 added CIWS gatling gun defence x 2 to the ship in place of the side guns

10 added a sparrow rocket launcher to the roof at rear of ship

11 removed the little rescue boats , as no need for them with the well deck facility

note 9 & 10 are crytek made assets from the sb2 editor added to the ship )

Both versions of the ship , have been exported to the crysis pc game engine , sandbox 2 editor as 4 separate .cgf format models , each cgf can be approx 40000 polys , each cgf section has an identical pivot point , so when in sandbox 2 it is really easy to slide the 4 sections of the model together to
recreate the whole , and the model can be permanently fixed together in editor with a few mouse clicks )

Personally i am really pleased with how good this model looks and performs in crysis , very little detail has been sacrificed in its conversion and export to the game )

In the future i would like to uvw and skin it approriately , and have the ship in game , drivable , with the possibility of controlling and conducting ship to shore naval bombardment ! :-)

Anyway enough said , John i really hope you like it , and enjoy the visuals )

That's a great idea using that ship, I was thinking when I looked at it that its lower poly count would make it game viable! :-)

Not to happy seeing it sink though!

Edit:

A few tweaks to the model that I would suggest.:-

The 30mm guns you have removed could be re-added to the rear of the funnel on the platforms (You still have the directors there for the 30mm infact).

I would add another beam support underneath the CIWS, currently you have one just on the corner underneath it, I'd put one under the oppistae corner of it.

I'm not sure on using the sea-sparrow system, since Sea Wolf already covers that area and with the added CIWS you added it is a slight overkill. also, in the possition you have placed it you are obscuring the rear Sea Wolf trackers line of site to targets approaching from the rear. If you want to use a CIWS missile system alongside the phalanx, I'd probably use the Sea-Ram system instead as its slightly smaller, I'd add it to the platforms on either side of the hanger entrance, this would fix the previous issue, as well as prevent major restructuring on the hanger roof to support the weight.

I'd also offset the drydock slight and provide a small opening for the towed sonar array. These ships primary role was to be towed sonar array platforms and although this role has evolved over the years, it should probably be kept somewhat.

I'd probably remodel the Vickers to the Mod 1 variant that has now been fitted to the Type 23's, not only is it more modern, put its lower poly than the Mod 0 version! ;-)

Its really cool seeing it in game, you make me want to model my own with the full interior (although not sure the Royal Navy would be happy if I modeled a fully accurate interior of the ship!) :-)

Very nice indeed Roger, i echo some of suricata's comments especially about sea sparrow, but its your model and you do as you please. By the way Me and Suricata were both on HMS Westminster at the same time. Need to know anything about engineering as him.

John's vanilla version , as i call it , is unaltered apart from the inclusion of the bridge building , being a 2 floor building , with imaginative computer consoles etc
perhaps an over sight on my behalf , becoz i have not provided any in game screenshots of this version , it has no well deck , and the rear of the ship has the array etc !

i can provide some in game pics of the vanilla / real configuration at your request )

the real or vanilla version i have taken no libertys with , in terms of equipment tampering ! )

In the crysis game the defacto bad guys are the north koreans , in the 3d editor are nk warships , tanks , helos , soldiers etc etc

the ship being sunk i am afraid is the fault of those dastardly north koreans , who also like to do such stuff in real life , as well as shell islands ! (

i was under strict orders from KIM IL DONG , to show eye candy screenshots of the ship in distress , and i had little choice with his ak47 pointed at my head , and a mini nuke wmd suitcase placed on my lap , i can only apologise for being used as a propoganda pawn by the nk leadership against the pride of the royal navy ! :-(

my fantasy version , well deck variety , has the inclusion of the usa ciws and sparrow launcher becoz they were to hand easily as part of the 3d editor , and the ship and ships to come will form part of a greater allied armada in the sb2 game engine , so the inclusion of these usa equipment addons seemed reasonable to me on a fantasy game level .

its quite possible i may tweak the well deck version more , with additional optional weaplons loadouts , so suggestions welcome )

i have always liked the ship bucket type fantasy ships online website , with what if , and deriative versions of things , fantasy what ifs , and never builts etc

Yeah how are things going on this, sorry not been around a while as life has been in turmoil but enough about that for the time being
