View Full Version : Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyer

Whilst I'm waiting for some more accurate plans for my Type 23, I decided to start work on the Type 45 destroyer. I'm making this as a low polygon model, so the details will be much simpler (and easier for the computer to handel). So far I've just blocked out the hull and main superstructure.
I plan on making this mesh a public release once its done.

you will have some friendly lowish poly competition soon , as i have my jecobin type 45 hms daring drawings mounterd in max , ready to make one for crysis sandbox 2 in a few weeks time )
just finishing off my hybrid arleigh burke class ship here for sb2 , its kinda churchill- esque !
look forward to seeing yours develop ) and looking forward to building mine from scratch too , from the drawings :-)

Done a bit more work on her, have to keep pinching myself to stop my urge to make it high polygon! Hoping to have it finished over the weekend (optimistically).

Looking good mate, did you get my PM

I did John, thanks, I'm working on the Type 23 right now infact :-)
I'm actually making the 2 ships on different computers, the type 23 is been made at home on my main machine, the type 45 is been made on my laptop when I'm not at home :)

Glad you got them, well how long before the 45 becomes just a little bit beyond low poly mate Lol :):):)

Well my plan is too add the various vents (using procedural textures for the grills) and then add the guardrails and leave it at that detail wise, then I'll go though all the pieces and remove any polygons that arn't visable. I'll try and finish it this weekend and release it, otherwise I know I'll just get carried away with it! :-)

Almost finished, had to remake the main superstructure so that it would flow into the hull properly, which has increased the poly count slightly. All I have to do is add the anchors and stabilisers now and then I'll release it. The current face count is about 50,000, although 15,000 of those comes from the lifeboats, so I'll probably remake those to be less smooth!
The below render is of the 2 versions of the ship, the ship in the foreground is what the Daring class will look like if it ever gets fitted with the Phalanx and Harpoon launchers that she was designed to be able to be fitted with, the ship in the background is what the Daring class currently looks like.

Yeah, it actually infuriates me somewhat looking at the Type 45. It really is a great ship and the PAAMS system definatly seems to be capable of holding its own, but, when the Royal Navy is been forced to reduce its size, it seems somewhat counter productive to remove the effectivness of the ships as well. As it stands, The Type 45 has no anti-ship capabilty other than its 4.5" gun and its helicopter. It also concerns me that if the PAAMS systme goes down, there is no back up system (such as the Phalanx). I don't think the Type 45 even has torpedo launchers, although I know its primary focus is anti-air, it seems a bit of an undersite to not give it the capabilty to defend itself from submarine attack (without relying on its helicopter).
It seems the lessons of the Falklands are getting forgotten, because lets face it, if something like that was to heppen again, we wouldn't have time to get all the ships refitted with the weapons required. i still think the Type 23 needs a backup system for the Seawolf as well, since it can only take on 2 targets at a time.
On the bright side, ratings get the same living quarters on the Type 45 that PO's get on Type 23's :-)

Yeah accommodation is good but it is a warship now a cruise liner, i hope they are not spending the money in the wrong places. Harpoon and Phalanx are equipment we already have, take it off the old 42's and sold 23 and put it on the 45, sounds to me like they are hedging their bets as there maybe newer equipment around the corner.
Budgets are tight and they want the aircraft carriers, but yet again farce, there as there will be no F/W aircraft to launch from them.
I think they should seriously think about not replacing Trident, there is a nuclear version of Tomahawk which most modern SSN's can fire, get that and forget about building a replacement submarine to launch whatever replaces Trident.
No torpedoes i did not know that but not surprising, look where the seaboat is now. Even AAW ships had torpedoes. If they dont have that like you said they may as well have no Sonar and save money because you cant always rely on the Helo to fly.
Anyway looking forward to playing with 23 and 45

hi guys , the model is super duper , for guess what game ? yep sb2 crysis ) lol
i like the versions with the ciws's and the lifeboats !
did u model form jecobin drawings or photos etc ?
i still want to have a stab at it from my drawings , but your 45 is well wicked for the game , no doubt , i could easily cryalise it , if u release the mesh ,to have some internal rooms and stuff for the player to enter )
anyway i really love it , and i hope the version i have a go at making , looks as nice as yours

I modeled it useing some very low quality top and side view scans I found of the Type 45 Jecobin plans. I made it low poly so it canbe used as a backgroudn ship in renders, or for use in computer games, would love to see it in SB2 Crysis! :-)
I'm also considering modeling a concept ship design I came up with to compete with the curent Type 26. Which I'll also probably make in low poly as well :-)
John, I completely agree with the Trident replacement, I think it's a much better idea to use a smaller Tomahawk variant fired from an Astute class, than having the 4 large SSBNS, which are very restricted in their operating duties compared to an SSN.

sweet mate , well when its finished , if u send it my way , and give me permission to cryalise it with some internal rooms added , i will get it in game )
obviously its your model , and i would not abuse it in any way , commercially etc etc
Roger )
p.s me and John have discussed in pm and email, plans for shipping in general for crysis sb2 , be cool to share the vision with you one day , perhaps we could get a team of hobbyists together , that want to contribute 3d stuff in , on a non commercial hobby basis , which is what i do )
i am finishing off an enhanced arleigh burke class for crysis here , trying too , had some hull frustrations last night on it , but after that will be building some more new ships , from blueprint drawings
all the best

Finished the model now, although there are a few areas I wanted to tweak, I'd decided not to as I know I'll just get carried away and turn it into a higher poly count than needed. You can find the mesh in the Downloads (http://www.military-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4773) area of this forum.

Congratulations
very good modelling but tell me u finished the textures too ?
Suricata

it's just basic procedural textures for the most part, the only main texture i made was for the deck for the turret turning circles and flight deck markings, and I texture for the ships crest.

The model is in the downloads section on this site. It isn't optimised for Crysis Sandbox, but you are more than welcome to convert it. :-)
