Mhh.. Keep trying G_Zod. I have a little question. Are you using 3ds max?
I will try to wright a little tutorial for 3ds max.
It is not bad what you got here, but there is no reflection on the surface.
And are you trying to make a ocean? Or something else??
I will keep in though... Let me know what software you are using and what for
kind of water you need... Ocean, River...

Sorry can't help you with this... But probably Levias will help you further with
this... Good luck.

problem i am having is i want to do a render of a ship on a relatively calm sea, i cant seem to get the effect of the water dissapearing into the distance. without getting some kind of tiling issues, anyone ever achived a really nice sea or ocean effect thet could quickly tell me?
Well... Have a little patience Nistrum.. I wrigting one... and it will not take a long
time to accomplisch that tutorial..

I am looking for a good ocean and wake tutorial also.
I have a large ship that will be making a double wake.

3D Studio Max 8
I got my hands on an add-on for 3dsmax (6 at the time) call Seascape 1.0 It was designed to produce an ocean surface, wakes, single/multi waves and ripples. What I am not sure is if it works with the current version 7 or 8 of 3dsmax. Also not sure if it is even still available.
The great thing about this program was that it optimized your polys for renders(lots of polys up close to the camera, very little at the horizon) Worth a look.

Both Dreamscape and Seascape work with Max 8. Both give reasonable results for static images but animations look a little suspect, and both cost a few hundred dollars. Next Limit offer Realflow 3 as a demo with no time limits or restrictions. The beauty of Realflow is that it is multi-format compatible, but it only generates the geometry, you still need to add shaders to the sea surface.

i have used dreamscape and prettymuch plan not to use it anymore in the future
http://www.xs4all.nl/~kwvduijn/bismarck/wip53.jpg
for now this was one of the best images i managed to produce with it
i did produce wakes for one of my ships
although getting it to look GOOD and making your ship bouyant is two other problems you have
nowdays i use vray displacement with Subpolydisplacement
and home made vray shaders to achieve an even better look
will post something in a few minutes

maya fluids is still based on its own fluid "plugin" so to say
i actualy have toyed with it and tbh there are alreadys om excelent files wich u can use as templates..

I use dreamscape... and got pretty good results.. this animation was done in 5 days.... it's not perfect.. and I am certainly NOT looking for a critique....

i have managed to get better results than what you just showed
the only thing i had problems with is the wake distortion by the propellors
unforunatly the files got lost when my previous hosting decided to kick me

heres what i had previously refered to
(see attachement currently rendering a more tropical version too "edit added some darker renders aswell")
this is made with vray displacement and shaders "basicly threw a noise map in the vraydisplacement modifier wich i can animatie via the noise phase
this way its also easy to make whitecaps using the same noise but withg a bigger black area "highlighting the tops" something to do with the levels or so
i will continue developing this untill i get a nice shader with everything in it
i already had a tutorial based for this but it got lost in the chrash although it was only part one of thee "basic shader, advanced shader and the final part would have been foam and wakes"
by the way another VERY interesting plugin by scanline.de
http://www.flowlines.de/gallery01.html
a must too see if you wish to do fluids

i would very much like to see the way you do the wakes... and flowline looks AMAZING... been seeing this for about a year now.. but it's not for sale unless you have a quarter of a million.... ah well... pocket change for some....

stills i paint using photoshop
and animations i use
http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/55 as a base for my wakes ofcourse my map will look somewhat more complex but the aproach remains the same
i previously used dreamscape to generate an animated foammap but since i never found out how to get proppelor distorions in there i scrapped the entire aproach.
sometimes i make several foammaps, each of these i animate starting full then fade out. these will then be overlapping eachother and be made loopable.

hmm.... i see.. well.. what i do is to use the one foam map i generated with dreamscape that works and i use that as a base and then double it over again for the wake behind the ship ("prop distortion" if you wish...) and of course offset it by a couple of frames....
That said, id' really like to see one of your anims... especially if they are better than mine...
thanks,

thanks,
i used an entire foammap as it is excelent for bowwaves
unfortunatly i lost my only good animation due to hdd failures and afterwards getting kicked off my webhost where i stored most of my data. i had tranfered most of the stuff i found copyworthy to my new website but forgot to copy the animations
"i coudnt acces my ftp and had closed directories" so i had to guess all the filenames inorder to save them" then after a week they deleted my files aswell.
perhaps i will do a new animation for the graf zeppelin.

you should blend the sky in the water using reflections

heres a raw version of how i do bow splashes and wakes and whitecaps in photoshop sometimes i migght use a particlesystem as reference to achieve what i want
just a basic pixel brush and thge smudge tool
3 separate layers here
first the splash on the pole wich i burshed then smudged into shape both with a pixelbrush painted on 100% opacity
second was the water drop layer wich is basicly the same brush but light touches to not drag lines later removed off excess watdrops with eraser tool
last is layer is the wake basicly the same paintbrush but opacity on 25%
then drag in the shape and roughly add in the distortion by the waves
paint over the same spot several times to achieve a light layered effect afterwards i added a mas to fade it out a bit
this is basicly how i build up everything like shells hitting the water and waves
except that i use more layers and blend alot more using smudge
Well here is my scene, that i have done with 3ds max 8 without any plugin and rendered with Mental ray.
What do ye think.

needs some tweaking but otherwise id say it looks great
im not that fond of max bumpmapping or displacement mappin because i never managed to get peaking waves
it always looks rounded off for some reason
i didnt use any plugin either just vray renderer.. comes with a set of decent tools to create what i want
= that i use vray for all my renders works out nice too
OUTSTANDING !!!
Is there anyway I might get it?
I am needing something like this for a very large ship.
