This one...so tough...fire or no fire.... which do you prefer ?

I am personally divided about which is better. I get completely opposite responses from people.

My personal preference would be without the fire.

The fire trails to me seem to fill in alot of the space necessary to give the piece room and as such it feels quite claustrophobic or too "busy". If it needs evidence
of the attack being successful I'd suggest a single strike on the main wing or something like that (I know the tail already has one) or possibly the start of dark smoke trailing from the plane but even then it should be fairly light.

These are only my opinions, it's still a class piece of artwork! ;)

I think the fitre gets in the way, it disturbs the composition a bit, maby some fire on some of the other airpalnes, further away? great pic!!

Buellifull, if you watch closer, you can see fuel trailing from the right wing of the 109 and damage on it as well.

Without fire/smoke looks a lot faster and keeps the main subject better in focus.

You could always go somewhere in between? Light smoke? :)

Overall I think I prefer it without fire... the light smoke works better, but I think the flames are still drawing the eye away from the spitfire a bit too much... They both look good though, but if the spitfire needs to stand out more I'd say stick with no fire.

I agree with smedge - fire on one of the planes in the background would work better.

I'm leaning towards without the fireball...hard choice though.

Nice try... I think I'll stick with no smoke, though. It somehow gives the scene more depth, making it more dynamic. You feel like you're up there, rolling over into a rollercoaster downwards. The images with smoke lack that feel, as the horizon is not as clear.

no fire for me, I think the composition feels a little claustaphobic with the smoke and fire

I vote for "without"
I like the black smoke, but not the flames ...

Fuel streaming from the wing is a bit out of context as the Bf 109 has on tanks in the wings

Oil from the radiator? :D

I have to go with the fire image. The dark smoke is not too distracting to me, since it seems to follow the flow of motion and draws the eye along really well. The fire and darkness of it all gives a feeling of how devistating those hits could really be.

In my opinion the best version was the very first one with smokin' spitfire and without gunfire and shells. The version with smokin' messerschmitt looks great but the image is loosing its photographic character (maybe if the fire and smoke were a bit more realistic) and the version without smokin' fighters looks a bit empty (the very first image was telling a story - the spit in the background has been hit and then messerschmitt pilot was in trouble with second spitfire on its tail, all other fighters were creating the background of this drama). Besides I believe in Wiek first felling of the image.

Thank you Peter ! I was saying to skyraider the other day, I should NEVER EVER again start messing with an image that is already done. It always ends up the same, you ruin the image. Correcting mistakes is fair enough, but actually changing content is wrong. Art shouldn't be a democracy or else we'd have a war on our hands very soon. It should be about what the artists wants to create, wether you enjoy it or now. I will revert the image to what I feel it needs to be.

I agree in 100%. This is YOUR image.

I did say to leave the gunfire off ;)
Tailband is a historical correction. Spent shells have aded to the image and removing the vertical Messerschmitt has improved the composition. Nobody said you should add massive fireballs
