View Full Version : Real Stealth Technology around the corner?

In an article on the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6064620.stm) website, a team of British and US scientists have developed an "invisibility cloak" that could be used to hide aircraft, missiles or ships from conventional radar.

Current stealth technology deflects the radio waves transmitted by a radar, so that the return to the reciever is reduced, making it more difficult to either track or identify a "stealthy" target. But a skilled operator or good tracking computer can still "see" a possible threat. This new technique appears to allow the radio waves to pass around an object. It is important that the radio waves pass around the object, to make the radar reciever believe that there is nothing there but fresh air. Effectively, this means that an operator or a tracking computer cannot "see" the target on radar.

Scary stuff, if you ask me. It would allow someone using this technology to be able to attack someone and the first you would know about it is when you see (optically, with mod 0 Eyeballs) the aircraft or missile bearing down on you.
