View Full Version : Convair UC-880 (Refuelling-Tanker)

Convair built the CV-880 as a jetliner in the late '50's with a capacity from 88-115 not counting the crew. It was marketed for intermediate range with a high cruise-speed (groundspeed 615 mph), and capable of taking off under some conditions from fields as short as 5,350 feet in length.

Interestingly, one of them was converted into a mid-air refuelling tanker for the US-Navy. For some reason, the sound-suppressors weren't removed, and it's CJ-805's (CJ-805 was a stripped down, de-rated civilian version of the J-79) were replaced with standard J-79's.

During the F-18 Test Program it, and 3 KA-3B tankers were used as support aircraft.

You guys thought I rendered that? I'm quite flattered but no, those are photographs, not renderings...
