anyone interested?
http://www.the3dstudio.com/product_search.aspx?id_author=130948
who knows maybe someone will find a use for them.
only available in .mb format as .obj format files are just too darn large (at least 4x the original size usually!)

Very generous or utterly crazy! :D
You could have made a good few $$$ with those models, mate, allowing yourself to buy a new computer and make even more models ;)

id` have felt too guilty charging people for models i made just for fun.
+ 30% tax is just crazy, id rather give things away!

The problem is, other people won't feel too guilty of taking your free stuff and selling it for money or simply flogging them off as their own. Alvaro knows all about this and it leaves a real nasty feeling inside...
Also there's no need to feel guilty for selling models in which you invested hundreds of hours of your time.
Another thing to take into consideration is that freelancers who have to make a living out of this kind of modelling will have a hard time competing with your top notch free models! ;)
But I appreciate and admire your generosity! :)

The Policarpov I-16 was blatantly used in a commercial publication, I can show scans if you want, but on the other hand it helped me to make contacts with people in that publication and right now I'm doing commitments for them.
For me it is an ended question.
I understand Ronnie's point of view as freelance doing ilustrations for books. This is a very difficult business to work in and some issues don't help too much, for example, editor's perception about how much this kind of work really costs.
I have some mixed opinions about that, I share Ronnie concerns but as Blender user I'm supposed to have open mind about that questions.

You are incredible generous ....I use only for myself as reference ....my concerns is : - do not renounce to model further
- anyone who intend to use your models mentioned you....

yup, sorry ive pulled them,
i got a realy nasty bunch of emails from folk telling me i had no right to offer my models for free and i was making it harder for legitimate sellers to make money!
so i thought better of it and deleted them,
pete.cook
06-01-2006, 3:17 PM
Sorry to hear about the emails flak. IMHO you have every right to offer them for free if you so wish. They are your meshes to do with as you wish. Maybe if someone with your skill was offering good meshes for free, then people wouldn't be getting ripped off buying some of those incredibly poor meshes out there.
krazycolin
06-01-2006, 3:56 PM
yeah Flak... seems a bit... I dunno.... silly.... I certainly wouldn't have sent you an email telling you to stop...
Who are these legitmate sellers anyway? In fact... I think you should post the names of those people so that we can all avoid buying anything from them in the future. They are sad, sad jerks... (can I say that and not get banned??)... I firmly believe that you are free to do what you wish with your porperty and no one has the right to tell you different.
Maybe it would be a good idea to have a section of free stuff on this stuff... that way, no one in the future will have this problem...

That's it in a nutshell... sucks big time to be told you can't do something cause others are afraid... besides... exactly how much do you make on a tank? not much... there are places on the net where you can buy a Tiger 1 or 2 for 40 bucks.. .and they are pretty good.. (not at the same level as yours, Flak)... so i wonder what prompts these "villains" to do what they did....????

As Pete says, plenty of people sell crap for too much money. But also some people do try to make a living of it and you indeed touched a soft spot there clearly! :)
Either way, from experience I have learnt that giving things away for free hardly ever pays off. Sounds silly, but I am sure you know what I mean. It just comes back to bite you in the ass and nobody really needs that hassle.
What you can do is host them on your own website (if you have one) and that way get plenty of visitors in. A few sellers may be upset, but tons of users will love your stuff.
All in all, you'd do yourself a massiev favour by putting them back up and putting a realistic but attractive price tag on them. That way everybody benefits, including serious buyers and your wallet. You deserve it, no matter if it was just a hobby and a bit of fun for you :)

In concrete, I collect models 3d, for my personal use and I prefer to change the ones that have provided to obtain good models of other colleagues, in order to having a good one coleccion, but not for commercial use.
Maybe, there be people that can use your material for commercial use, that is the bad to give it free in places as that, that then do not you control your models. On the other hand exchanging them .... but confidence. Sorry for my poor english ;)

Agreed, human nature doesnt value what it gets free.
I learnt that if I gave a Bonsai away it'd be dead inside 3 months. Charge a whack for it and it'd be cared for for years.

a small selection of my models are available at the token price of $1 over at turbosquid.com if anyones interested (not quite free i know),
the direct link to my products on the site is too long to post so just search for flakmonkey at turbosquid (should give 3 results)
vkirchner- to be honest i dont really have much of a method, my texturing usually just comes together as a kind of happy accident, and involves much trial & error.
vkirchner
08-08-2006, 2:23 AM
Well at least you an I have one thing in common, we both have accidents, mine are not usually happy. LOL! Do you work mainly from photographs to create your textures, or do you use procedurals? They are fantastic, matching your models very well. I have looked at the Renderosity site also at your work, very impressive display. I will just have to continue to aspire.

Anybody know how to convert from mb to 3ds? or better yet C4D??
Thanks Flakmonkey!!
Skyraider3D
08-08-2006, 9:53 AM
Look for a program called 3D Exploration. It can convert many types of 3D formats.
mikeb
08-10-2006, 11:52 AM
Unfortunatly i have both c4d and 3d exploration and though it says it can import C4D i still havent found a file old enough for it to be able to read C4D is no on 9.6 and even going back to ver 6.. 3D expl. doesn't read C4D..
The good news is that to transfer a maya file to C4D is quite easy, save it in maya as an .obj file, which loads into C4d..
Skyraider3D
08-10-2006, 12:06 PM
OBJ indeed is a fairly universal file format and accepted by most programs.
Wyrmshadow
08-10-2006, 1:06 PM
What if we don't have Maya and my 3dexploration won't read it? Is there a Maya plugin for 3dsmax?
flakmonkey
08-11-2006, 12:48 PM
my apologies for not being able to post them as .obj files, i tried but the file sizes were too massive for turbosquid to host,
i guess could upload them as .fbx files, thats a pretty universal format. almost every app has an fbx import plugin, it was designed for motionbuilder and is a million times better than obj.
let me know....
Hi flakmonkey,
if it's o.k. for you to share the files completely free on the web then my suggestion would be to set up a .torrent file. This way you're not limited by filesize or hosts like turbosuid.
greetings,
Hans

08-11-2006, 5:34 PM
Well, fbx would work for me...
If you're going to give them away, why not donate them to MilMesh?
Maybe they could host them?? Just a thought.
Thank you,
Jamie
flakmonkey
08-12-2006, 1:00 PM
i would be happy to donate them to milMesh (didnt think they hosted files though?),
The only reason theyre not free right now is because it annoyed other vendors who were selling similar products and so they were given a token price to appease the angry masses.
an interesting sidenote- for my shockingly expensive $1 models over at turbosquid, 80% of that $1 goes on taxes and comission, & after exchange rates i get around 11p per model!
Wyrmshadow
08-12-2006, 1:18 PM
I did the same for some of my models....$1 each, and Turbosquid changed the prices to $30-something.

It's perfect, man. I'm waiting for your next model.

Gee, didn't figure that. Are the customers mostly in the Poser community??
flakmonkey
08-15-2006, 11:52 AM
roshent- people mostly buy them to use as parts for their own models,
i doubt many Poser folks use them as they would need to convert them to obj to work with poser + poser work doesnt contain many tanks from what i can see, mostly naked women etc ;)
karras- well i could post my strv103 if it were finished, in fact its still pretty much the same as it was when i posted the wip image.

And a very generous act to share your artworks!
(BTW there should be a way to "lock" or weld a model whilst finished, so it couldn't be broken up again later by others. More like keep it as a frozen object.. )
