Hello,
I started on a Corsair yesterday. First airplane I attempt too.
So far it's pretty lowpoly as I'm still tweaking the main shapes. The wings are currently a separate object.
I'm going to try and make this as accurate as I can. :)
C&C are welcome.

Thanks, guys! :)
Haven't done anymore yet though. I've been struggling with the reference material. I have plenty of good, just that I've once again found that getting the background images match up in the viewports is a pain. The cockpit looks bigger on my frontview but the rest seems to match good. and they're all taken from the same set.
I also found a nice tip in a tutorial on colacola.se (it's linked in that big aircraft modelling tip-thread here on MM). It showed a number of image planes with crosssections of the body to model it after to get the shape right. So I tried that and it opened a nice world of pain! I can find good cross-section, but none that comes with equally usable schematics of the rest. I'm not giving up on that method though. I'll have to puzzle it together from various sources. :)
giant: Nice :) Been using XSI for a year now (used lw for a few years before I moved over), but I still feels like a newbie sometimes. :)

Good start, keep it up. SkyRaider told me it's a pain to model this one because it has several strange shapes and cuts. You might be able to talk to him if you run into problems, but I'm sure he's pretty busy right now.

Ronnie makes a point of always being available for questions of this type... and iIam certain that he would be willing to share some of his knowledge on this subject...

Oh yeah, I have no doubt. He has helped me so much already. He's a great guy. But I haven't seen many posts from him since the crash, so I'm a bit worried about him.

Good start, wings look good but cockpit opening looks too big. To be honest there is not much to crit at this stage. Once you have the fin and tailplane in place as well as the canopy, it will be easier to give you some feedback with regard to accuracy issues.

worried about Ronnie? AH... he's just mad at adobe right now... :DLOL guys! I'm active enough alright :D Look... nearly 100 posts already!
Good start on the Corsair
I'm going to try and make this as accurate as I can. Then you're in for a very painful time  I've been working on mine since July last year and am not enjoying it much... Can't wait to start texturing.
A model can only be as accurate as your reference material, so what drawings are you using? I've compared over a dozen sets, and there are only two sets of accurate drawings for the Corsair. One is drawn by Matsuba Minoru and the other by Rikyu Watanabe. If you're using a different set, best drop me an e-mail (http://skyraider3d.military-meshes.com/skyraider/contact.htm) ;)

Thanks, guys :)
Yeah, I'm starting to realise that I've stepped into a whole world of pain. :)
It's a jungle really. So many versions of it. I'm going for the F4U-1A or D, the one with the shorter canopy. I did start out with the longer in mind though.
Don't think I have any of their drawings. I've noticed the lack of consistance between various drawings. It only adds to my pre-existing confusion! :)
So I think I'll drop you that email, thanks!
kevjon: yeah, at the time it felt easiest to make it that big cause of the drawings I had didn't match up completely. So I just deleted the polygons in that area. :)

Ok, I've pretty much started over since I got some better drawings. Thanks, Skyraider! :)
Anyway, Now I've been working on the tailfins and also the canopy. the fins look ok so far I think, but needs more work. the canopy, I'm not too satisfied with that one. Some thing looks off to me. it doesn't exactly follow the outlines of the drawings yet, as seen in the wire shot, but it's something more than that.
It sure is a tricky shape. but I'm not giving up on this baby :)
Any pointers would be appreciated. :)

Looking good so far. Be careful that the windscreen doesn't get hollow, though. The plexiglass is practically straight from whatever angle you look at it. I built the cockpit section more or less seperate from the model, because the canopy is hardly flush with the airframe.
PS. Penguins are cool ;)

Thanks, guys :)
Skyraider: You mean straight in the angle upwards from the body to the top of the windshiled? Hmm yeah, that might be whats odd with it. Mine does look to rounded at some angles.
I made the canopy separate from the body first then merged them together. Might have been a mistake hehe :)

I've been bulding a Corsair for about two months now. Ironically enough it's my first 3-D model ever, but once I'm done with it I'll have some valuable experience.
It looks like you have the same reference that I am using. I also use the original blueprints from chance-vaught, though mainly for little components in the cockpit. I have the fuselage shaped and the engine done (it's not the most detailed one, but for the scene I invision I don't much need it to be), and most of the instrumentation done as well (though I was making stuff up for that one - it got too boring to keep trying to imitate what I could barely make out in my reference photos). The main trouble I'm having now is shaping the prop. If anyone can help me out with that in any way, I'd appreciate it.
