View Full Version : Gutted :( (or: Photoshop is a piece of SH*T!)

After several hours working in Photoshop I finally was nearing the end of my first 2D artwork. Then when I tried to save it, Photoshop gave me the "Can't complete action because of program error" message. The next half hour I spend trying to find a way to save my image. I couldn't save, couldn't save as, couldn't export to Image Ready, couldn't copy-paste the image layer for layer to another program (an older version of Photoshop wouldn't start either so I wouldn't actually know where to copy it to!). Searching the internet I found a tip to solve this problem when it happens: disconnect your internet. So I did.
The next second Photoshop crashed and I lost all my work for the evening.
I am absolutely gutted now
Are there any alternatives to Photoshop, besides Paint Shop Pro and The Gimp? I never want to touch this piece of garbage again!

The only other alternative I can think is Corel Painter. It handles bigger images easier and saves much quicker than PS. I haven't had any stability problems so far but haven't used the software extensively yet so don't really know if it is unstable. Good for 2D artwork though.

Because of experiences with other "high-end" pieces of software, I save like an obsessive maniac...like every 5 minutes or so. I know it never does any good to say stuff like that after the fact, but it's just what I do to avoid losing work. I also save in incremental files in case I manage to mess up the latest version, especially in Maya which loves to secretly corrupt your files at the most inconvenient time. :frown: Maybe I spend more time saving than actually working, but after many years with computers I have learned to not trust them at all. At one point I had a disk drive that would let me save once on a floppy disk, and the second time it would corrupt the disk. So I would basically have to reformat the disk before every save...I lost LOTS of data before I figured out the secret. The local computer technicians couldn't find anything wrong with my drive, and I couldn't afford a new one back then.
Anyway, sorry to hear about this!! That always sucks. Many, many condolences.
In my opinion I still like Photoshop the best, unfortunately.

Photoshop is still the best you're gonna get for 2-D editing. It isn't the industry standard for nothing.

Cheers for the support guys. I'm using CS so no patch for me. I find CS2 a pain in the *, cause they moved so many things around. The new layer controls, altered shortcuts, removal of some very useful features, it's horrible...
Archetype, I considered that but didn't have anywhere to paste to (MS Paint?)... and it was a 3000x2000 image. Also I'd lose all my layers so wouldn't be able to finish it really...
