Setting up backgrounds in 3DS Max 8

As some of you know I use LW9 exclusively but I would like to try my hand at Max. I would like to know what's the best way of setting up blueprint backgrounds in Max?

- placing the elevations on a PLANE geometry (with 1 pixel = 1 CM guide) so if your image is 640x480, make a plane sized 640x480 and apply the image
(This also works using a BOX, but requires a bit more organization and planing.)
