Vought SB2U Vindicator

If it flies, store it in the aviation hangar.

Vought SB2U Vindicator

Post by denders »

I've been slacking on this model, but I've started to work on it again.

I've also been working on an Accurate Miniatures 1/48 kit to warm up to it.

The plastic build is going to finish way before the digital build. ;)

I've had the kit for quite a while and I was using it as reference along with at least three different books, a couple sets of drawings, and photos from the internet and my visit to the museum at Pensacola almost 10 years ago.

I've also purchased a resin printer, so there may be a 1/32 scale model in the future. :D

I've started on parts for the "Dave".

Hi Dave -both digital and model looking great. Also admiring your acrylic building jig, did you make it up or is it commercially available. Cheers Pete

Pete, it's a commercially available unit. Have a look here. There are wooden jigs, jigs for monoplanes, biplanes, jets, etc.

Edit: I have no connection with UMM except for being a satisfied customer. There are other tools for model building too.

Well, I think I've got everything done with the wings. Since I've gotten back on this, I had checked out the tail surfaces.

The center section flaps will drop 60 degrees. The ailerons can be drooped 10 degrees to add lift. Under normal flight characteristics, the ailerons go up 15 degrees and down 9 degrees. But, when the ailerons are drooped the up travel is extended to 17 degrees and the down is 22 degrees. I have no idea how they did that mechanically.

Now, on to either the fuselage or the landing gear.

Nice!

About the extended aileron range of motion... my guess is that it was either a mechanical limiter on the aileron pivot itself, or it was a 2-stage pivot (kind of like a fowler flap maybe)
