Mk-48 ADCAP Torpedo [WIP]

This is my first attempt at 3D modeling in many years so I figured a relatively "simple" model of a torpedo would be a good way to get back into 3D modeling and not overwhelm myself. The general hull is simple, with a few elements to consider like panels and markings, most of which I plan to model and not rely on textures to accomplish. While the rear of the torpedo has more complex characteristics that I think are a medium challenge at least for me.
I've been getting reference materials and researching measurements as I start to setup to begin the model.
Everything I can find on the Mark 48 claims a diameter of 21in (530mm) by 19ft (5.8m) but when I set that up in 3D Studio Max the proportions just don't look correct. I like to set up a "ghost" model with the overall dimensions so the boundary of my models, and get a since of scale. This just felt off to me, however I'm going to start modeling. More shortly.
This posts is my forcing function to get started - I've been cramming on a website build for work. So today was the first day I could take a stab at it, plus it's raining outside.
